The Fort Worth Vikings set the standard they went unbeaten in tournament play until being defeated by Themboys who battled the Vikings in all 3 of the Vikings championship runs in 92,93,94 tournaments.

In 1995 themboys finally had enough talent to get past the Vikings and won the championship game by 6 points in a defensive battle.

These games were played outdoors in the elements which sometimes included light rain, ice on the fields and of course being Thanksgiving weekend you never knew what the weather would be but cold was always part of the tournament,The tournament was shut down after the 2001 tournament it was started as a way to help offset operating cost of the Lincolnshire Starz youth football program which only charged $20.00 to players to be on the team.

The Great Turkey Shootout became a success drawing teams from Waco, Lake Whitney and surrounding DFW areas as stated the weather would always be cold and wet and even ice ,but a full roster of teams would make the drive and do battle in the one day double elimination tournament held in Crowley,Texas at the time.

After hearing of the Vikings dominating play teams would sign up to get their shot at the champions only to find out the Vikings were a lot more than talk, they had a quick strike offense and defense that took no prisoners, because of the mercy rule they once beat a team 54-0 in the first 20 minutes of play.

Most points ever scored in the championship game was put up by the Alvarado Allstars who scored 100 in a blowout win vs Springtown  in 2001.

Themboys who were a good team also won back to back tournaments were knocked off by up start Roderic and the boys in 97 being defeated by 24 points ending the reign of the Vikings and Themboys over the tournament .

Roderic and the boys featured Roderic Boatman at the quarterback and no team in the tournament had an answer to contain his play which was why the Vikings were so successful the quarterback of both teams was more than other teams could defend, both the Vikings quarterback and Roderic won tournament offensive MVP honors,Roderic and the boys did not return to defend the tournament title in 98 and We ball won the tournament sweeping all comers.

2012 returns the tournament but indoors and 7 on 7 this brief history of the teams will lead into some of the storylines of the players who made the tournament one of the best to ever take place in the DFW area.
