Anthony Friesen of the Pembina Valley Orioles was named junior player of the year as Baseball Manitoba named its 2010 award winners November 20.

It also made a special presentation of the Sport Manitoba Achievement Awards to the Manitoba Junior Baseball All-Stars in recognition of their winning the 2010 Baseball Canada National Junior Championships in Trois-Rivières, Quebec.

Friesen, a left-handed pitcher for the Orioles, had regular season statistics that looked like video game numbers.

In 16 games, he compiled a 12-1 record, striking out 116 batters in 66 innings. He allowed an average of less than 3 hits per game and had a microscopic 0.71 earned run average.

Along the way, he set a new single season Manitoba Junior Baseball League strikeout record, breaking the old record of 115 set 30 years ago by Carey Candy of the Elmwood Giants.

No slouch with the bat, he batted .300 and finished third on the Orioles in runs batted in and second in doubles.

At the end of the playoffs, Friesen joined the MJBL All-Stars for the Baseball Canada National Junior Championships. The all-stars won the gold medal, in large part thanks to his contributions. He was selected as the tournament's most valuable player and top pitcher.

Anthony also got a surprise tryout opportunity from the Winnipeg Goldeyes in a pre season exhibition game against the University of Winnipeg last May.
