Posted Apr 8/12 - Woodland comes back from early loss to beat Castle Rock

If Woodland’s two games at the Castle Rock baseball tournament were supposed to be tune-ups for the Beavers’ league opener on Monday, Woodland coach Owen Frasier has to be feeling pretty good.

The Beavers started the day with a 6-2 loss to defending Class 1A champion Chimacum, but rebounded to beat host Castle Rock 6-0 on Friday.

Castle Rock also lost 9-5 to Rochester earlier in the day.

“That’s kind of how we expect to play,” Frasier said.

Three Woodland pitchers combined to shut out the Rockets (3-4) and allow only five hits and two walks. Trevor Huddleston earned the win after tossing the first three innings, allowing three hits.

Nate Williamson took the loss after striking out six in four innings. CR hit the ball well, coach Joe Bair said, but many were like glove-seeking missiles.

“We hit the ball hard, but it was right at their guys, it seemed like, all game,” Bair said.

“We played pretty good defensively,” Frasier said. “We only had one error.”

Andy Voelker went 2 for 3 with a double, and Tyler Wright doubled for the Rockets. For the Beavers (2-3), Troy Wasson was 4 for 4 with three RBIs, and Tanner Huddleston and Bryce McQuivey were each 2 for 4.

Woodland visits Washougal on Monday, and Castle Rock hosts Ridgefield on Tuesday.

Chimacum 6, Woodland 2

The defending 1A champs hit Woodland hard and early, chasing starter Hunter Huddleston after two innings. Chimacum scored two runs in each of the first and second innings, and one run in the third.

The Beavers managed only two hits and struck out 11 times.

Frasier believed facing the Cowboys’ loaded pitching staff was good preparation for the strong pitching of its Greater St. Helens 2A League foes.

“They’re a good club. we saw some pitchers comparable to what we will see in league.”
