The
2012 Woodland Beaver baseball team takes the field this season with playoff
aspirations- and for good measure-as they return nine players who saw varsity
action in 2012. The outfield will
be led by junior Cy Whitmire, who
started all 20 games last season for the Beavs and received all-league
recognition by the GSHL coaches. He will be aided in the outfield by much improved senior Dylan Wenger, who will start the year in left field. Juniors Austin Reynolds, and Dustin Schimelpfenig will both provide depth in the outfield and compete for playing time right away. Look for freshman Trevor
Huddleston, a speedy, confident youngster, to also see time in the
outfield and on the mound. Around the infield, the
Beavers return a great core group of players, led by senior Troy Wasson at shortstop. Wasson, a sure handed infielder with a quick release, is looking to
return to his all-league form of 2010. He will be joined up the middle by sophomore returner Tanner Huddleston, who is the team’s
most fundamentally sound player in the field and at the plate. At the corners, look for rising
sophomores Colton Lucas and Hunter Huddleston as break out players
this season. Both young men have put on weight and are full of confidence for
the new season. Senior Mason Knight will also see time at
first base, though his biggest contribution may be on the mound, as the
left-hander was named the team’s best pitcher last season. Behind the plate will be returning
first team all-league catcher Bryce
McQuivey (pictured), who led the Beavers in just about every major
offensive statistical category last season. Junior Jacob Knott will be looked upon for depth at the catcher position and first base, while
sophomore Kelly Wenger will also see
time at the corners depending on pitching match-ups. |
