Posted Jan 15/13 - Nationally-ranked Pflugerville moves to 28-0 with an 84-48 victory over Stony Point; Panthers sit atop District standings at 7-0

ROUND ROCK, Texas -- The first time Pflugerville and Stony Point met in district play this year on Dec. 4, the Panthers just edged the Tigers 74-73. On Tuesday, however, the nationally-ranked Panthers clamped down on defense en route to upending Stony Point, 84-48 in District 16-5A action. Both teams are ranked in the Texas 5A state Top 25 poll this week, with the Panthers sitting at No. 2 and Stony Point 23rd.

In another balanced scoring effort, Pflugerville was led by senior guard Brenisha Payne (#22, pictured) who had a team-high 15 points. Junior forward Jaden Sturm added 12 points and six rebounds. Two others were in double-figure Panther scoring as senior guards Taylor Ross and Amy Staha each added 11 points.

A suffocating Pflugerville defense was again the key for the Panthers, who move to 28-0 overall and to 7-0 in the District standings. Pflugerville is ranked No. 14 in this week's MaxPreps Xcellent 25 poll and No. 2 in Texas 5A play in the MaxPreps poll, the Texas Basketball Coaches Association (TABC)/TexPreps Basketball Magazine poll and the Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA) rankings.

The win moves P'ville to a two-game lead over both Stony Point (now 24-4 overall and 5-2 in the district) and Cedar Ridge in the District standings.

The Panthers jumped out to a 25-6 lead over Stony Point, which was not at full strength due to team illness. The Panthers, behind Payne, Ross and Staha, kept that same 19-point lead (41-22) at intermission.

Top Panther rebounders were junior forward Jonelle Smith and junior guard Kalea King, each with eight. Ross and junior guard Alyssa Echols each finished with five assists while Payne had four steals. Senior forward Diana Omozee finished with four blocks and four steals.

The Panthers return to action on Friday, Jan. 18 when they host District 16-5A opponent Westwood on Pflugerville Teacher/Staff/Alumni Appreciation Night. The varsity game tips at 7 p.m. Prizes and drawings will be held during the varsity game for those special guests in attendance as a way for the Pflugerville girls program to send a big "thank you" for their support and encouragement throughout the years.

The junior varsity and freshman Gold (A team) game against Westwood will be at 5:30 p.m. while at 7 p.m., the freshman Blue (B team) team is in action.

Against Stony Point, the Pflugerville junior varsity picked up a 46-27 victory as freshman post Alexis Bryant scored 14 points and freshman guard Mykiel Burleson added 11. Both the P'ville freshman Gold (A) team and Blue (B) teams lost to Stony Point by 72-20 and 30-13 margins.
