Posted Dec 1/12 - Panthers clinch Pflugerville Invitational title, upending Dallas Skyline 76-48 behind big second-half surge

PFLUGERVILLE, TEXAS-  Behind All-Tournament Team senior guards Taylor Ross (16 points, six assists) and Brenisha Payne (13 points, three steals), the state-ranked Pflugerville Panthers defeated Dallas Skyline, 76-48 Saturday afternoon in the Pflugerville Invitational championship game at the Panther Gym. The Panthers move to 14-0 by virtue of a huge second-half as the state's No. 2 ranked 5A team outscored Skyline, 39-19 in the final 16 minutes.

The Panthers jumped out to a 23-9 lead after the first period, but Skyline out-scored the Panthers 20-14 in the second period to close to within eight (37-29) at intermission. Leading 46-38 with two minutes left in the third, the Panthers went on a 17-1 run and pulled away to lead, 63-39 with five minutes to go.

Due to P'ville pressure defense, Skyline turned the ball over four times during that Panther run and also missed three shots.

In that 17-1 run, Payne, the Tournament's MVP, and Ross combined for 13 points, three assists and four steals.

Rounding out the Panthers double-figure scorers were senior guard Amy Staha (11 points) and senior forward Jonelle Smith (10 points). Staha added four rebounds and three assists.

Joining Payne and Ross on the All-Tournament Team was freshman guard Mikiel Burleson, who plays on the Panther JV squad which competed in the varsity division of the tourney. Burleson helped the Panther JV finish fourth in the varsity tourney. The Panther JV lost to Arlington Sequin in the third-place Gold Division contest.

All of Pflugerville's teams return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 4 when the Panthers open District 16-5A play by hosting Stony Point. Pflugerville is the defending district champion.

The varsity game tips at 7 p.m. while the JV and freshman Gold games are 5:30 p.m. contests. Also at 7 p.m. the freshman Blue teams will face off.
