Posted Nov 17/12 - Panthers claim third Greater Austin Tournament title by rolling past Rouse, 79-21
AUSTIN, Texas- Behind a balanced scoring attack and 21 steals, the No. 2 state-ranked Pflugerville Panthers clinched the Greater Austin Tournament championship with an easy 79-21 win over Rouse High School. Led by a 12-point, five-rebound effort from senior forward Diana Omozee and 10 points from senior guard Taylor Ross, Pflugerville improves to 7-0 with the win. The game was played at McNeill HS, host school of the tourney.

This was the Panthers' third Greater Austin tourney championship in the four-year history of the tourney. Head coach Nancy Walling's Panthers have played in all four championship games, winning the tourney in 2009 and last year while placing second in 2010.

The Panthers went 5-0 in the tourney, including a 67-32 win over Cedar Park in Friday night's semifinals. Rouse had its first loss of the year and stands 6-1. The Raiders had moved into the championship by defeating Connally 49-45 in the semifinals.

The the win over Rouse, the Panthers trailed 3-0 before blazing to a 25-2 run and led 25-5 with three minutes left in the first quarter. P'ville led 32-7 after the first period and 50-16 at the half.

Senior forwards Amy Staha and Jonelle Smith each chipped in with nine points, while junior guard Alyssa Echols (six points) dished out a season-high and game-high seven assists.

The Panthers return to action in key Monday and Tuesday games prior to taking a Thanksgiving holiday break. On Monday, Nov. 19, Pflugerville hosts former District rival Georgetown at 7:30 p.m. at the Panther Gym. Georgetown is now playing at the state 4A level and ranked third by TABC/Tex Preps Basketball Magazine. On Tuesday, Nov. 20, the Panthers travel to Waco to face the state's No. 5-ranked 5A team, Southlake Carroll, in a 6:30 p.m. game at Waco Midway High School.

Panther JV wins JV Division of the Greater Austin Area Tournament

The Pflugerville JV team also stayed undefeated over the weekend, moving to 7-0 and earning the Greater Austin Area Tournament JV title. Saturday, the Panthers defeated Georgetown 46-32 in the title game at McNeill HS, pulling away in the second half after holding a three-point (25-22) halftime lead.

The Panthers were led by sophomore guard Alyssa Washington and freshman guard Mikiel Burleson who each scored 17 points. Freshman post Alexis Bryant added nine points.

The Panther JV and freshmen teams also return to action on Monday, Nov. 19 against Georgetown. The freshman gold game is at 5 p.m. followed by the junior varsity (6 p.m.) and freshman blue (7:30 p.m.) contests.
