Posted Nov 15/12 - Pflugerville picks up two wins in first day of Greater Austin Tournament action
PFLUGERVILLE - The No. 2 state-ranked Panthers won both pool play games in the first day of competition at the 2012 Greater Austin Tournament. The Panthers, now 4-0, started with a 70-46 victory over Copperas Cove and then defeated Vandergrift, 80-38. The Panthers won their pool play.

The tourney is a varsity, junior varsity and freshman tournament running Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 15-17 at host McNeil High School, Pflugerville and Bowie high schools. Both of P'villes games were played at the Panthers' home gym Thursday.

On Friday, the Panthers begin play with a 2:30 p.m. game in the Gold Division (against an opponent TBA) at McNeill High School.

In the win over Copperas Cove (now 3-2), the Panthers led 40-22 at intermission. All 12 Panthers scored in the game, led by a game-high and season-high 15 points from junior forward Jaden Sturm and 11 points from senior guard Amy Staha.

Against Vandergrift (5-4), Pflugerville jumped out to a 52-22 halftime lead behind one of the best first-half shooting efforts in the program's recent history. The Panthers hit 25 of their 30 field goal attempts in the first half. Leading the way in the opening half was senior forward Jonelle Smith with 13 points and five assists, while senior guard Brenisha Payne added 11 points.

For the game, Smith ended with a game-high 15 points, followed by Payne and senior forward Diana Omozee who each finished with 12 points. Smith also pulled down five rebounds and had a season and game-high seven assists.
