Posted Jan 31/12 - No. 2 state-ranked Pflugerville improves to 35-0 overall, 10-0 in District 16-5A play with 61-42 win over McNeill; Panthers play final home game Feb. 3, hosting second-place Georgetown
AUSTIN, Texas -- Senior forward Itiana Taylor and junior forward Diana Omozee combined for 23 points and 12 rebounds to spur a balanced attack as the No. 2 state-ranked Panthers posted a 61-42 victory over McNeil at McNeil High School Tuesday night in District 16-5A action. The win pushed Pflugerville's record to 35-0 overall and to 10-0 in District action. In addition to ranking as one of the top two squads in Texas state 5A action, Pflugerville ranks No. 6 in the South Region of the USA Today Super 25 girls basketball regional rankings and stands No. 14 nationally in the USA Today Super 25 national poll. Head coach Nancy Walling's Panthers are one victory shy of tying the school record for most consecutive victories in program history.

The school record for most consecutive wins was set by the 1976-77 Pflugerville squad - playing at the 3A level - which went 36-0 to start the year before falling in the state playoff regional finals to finish 36-1. This 35-0 start is the Panthers' best-ever under Walling.

Against McNeil, Taylor finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and two assists while Omozee added 10 points and pulled down five rebounds.

Senior guard Ari Booth (PICTURED) and junior guard Taylor Ross added nine points apiece against the Mavericks, who fall to 18-14 overall and 2-9 in district action.

The Panthers led the Mavericks 15-6 after one quarter and extended the lead to 35-12 at intermission.

Pflugerville has two regular season games remaining - a home contest against District foe Georgetown on Friday, Feb. 3 (7:30 p.m. tip) on PHS Senior Night and an away game at District opponent Leander on Tuesday, Feb. 7 (7:30 p.m. tip). The Pflugerville-Georgetown game features the District's top two squads as Georgetown's lone district loss was to Pflugerville (65-48) on Jan. 10 at Georgetown.

Heading down the stretch of the regular season, the Panthers are impressively the only undefeated 5A team in the state of Texas and one of only eight undefeated teams across all Texas divisions (5A, 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A) and all private schools.

JV, Freshman Gold continue winning ways with wins over McNeil opponents

The Pflugerville JV squad remained undefeated with a 51-23 victory over McNeill while the Panther freshman Gold (A) squad recorded a 52-38 win.

The JV squad, now 27-0, was paced by sophomore post Makyndra Simmons (16 points) and sophomore forward Ariana Marks (11 points). For the 22-2 freshmen squad, guard Alyssa Washington netted 23 points to lead the Panther attack.

Both squads return to action on Friday (Feb. 3) against Georgetown with the freshman game at 5:15 p.m. followed by the junior varsity game (at 6 p.m.).
