Posted Jan 27/12 - No. 2 state-ranked Pflugerville continues winning ways, moves to 34-0 with 80-38 win over Westwood

PFLUGERVILLE, Texas-- Nine different players scored in a balanced attack for No. 2 state-ranked and undefeated Pflugerville as the Panthers cruised to an 80-38 victory over District 16-5A Westwood Friday night at the Panther Gym. Pflugerville moved to 34-0 overall and remained in first place in the District with a 9-0 mark, led by a 21-point, eight-rebound effort from senior forward Itiana Taylor and 15 points from sophomore post Jaden Sturm. The Panthers are also ranked No. 14 in the latest national USA Today high school rankings. Sitting No. 2 in the TABC/TexPreps Basketball weekly poll, the Panthers are impressively the only undefeated 5A team in the state of Texas and one of only eight undefeated teams across all Texas divisions (5A, 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A) and all private schools.

The Panthers are now two wins shy of tying the school record for most consecutive wins in a season. That mark of 36 straight victories was set by the 1977 team - playing in State 3A classification - which went 36-1. That PHS squad won its first 36 games before falling in the state tourney regional finals.

Joining Taylor and Sturm as leading performers were junior forward Diana Omozee (PICTURED) and sophomore post Mackenzie Coffey who each had nine points. Omozee pulled down seven rebounds. Taylor had a game-high five steals while Sturm had four.

Westwood (9-22 overall, 0-10 in the district) was forced into 30 turnovers.

Pflugerville returns to play on Tuesday, Jan. 31 in its second-to-last District game, facing McNeill HS at McNel in a 7:30 p.m. contest. That game is "Purple Night" in honor of fighting cancer. All cancer survivors will be honored pre-game and blue wrist bands (signifying the fight against colon cancer) will be sold for $1 at the game.
