Posted Nov 17/11 - 5-0 Pflugerville opens pool play at Greater Austin Tournamament victories over Rouse (82-43) and Killeen (72-28)
PFLUGERVILLE, Texas-- Behind two more balanced scoring efforts, the state-ranked Pflugerville Panther varsity basketball squad upped its record to 5-0 with victories over Rouse HS, 82-43, and Killeen HS (72-28) Thursday in opening pool play at the three-day Greater Austin Area Tournament.

Both games were played at Pflugerville's Panther Gym. P'ville, runnerup in last year's Greater Austin event, will next face Richland HS on Friday morning at 11:30 a.m. at the Panther Gym in continued pool play action. Following that game, the tourney moves to bracket play.

Against Rouse, six Panthers netted double-figure scoring, with junior guard Bre Payne leading the way with a career-high 18 points. Junior guard Taylor Ross added 14 points, while P'ville received 12 point apiece from senior post Itiana Taylor, senior guard Jasmyn Brooker and junior forward Diana Omozee. Omozee also had game-bests of seven rebounds and five steals, with the steals being a career high.

Senior guard Ari Booth added 11 points for Pflugerville, which led at intermission 33-12.

Pflugerville and Killeen meet for the second time this season, as the Panthers posted an 83-19 win over the Kangaroos on Nov. 11 in Killeen. In Thursday's game, Pflugerville jumped out to a lead of 11-0 and led after the first quarter, 15-4. The Panthers forced Killeen into six turnovers in the first quarter and six in the second, to take a 33-12 lead into halftime. The Panthers' biggest lead in the first half was 23-4 with  5:29 left to play following a Payne fastbreak layup.

Junior post Jonelle Smith finished with a game-high and career-best 16 points. Payne added 14 points and junior guard Taylor Ross chipped in with 10 points. Taylor ripped down a game-high 12 rebounds to go with six points.

Killeen committed 20 turnovers as the Panthers had 15 steals, led by four from Payne.

PANTHER JV AND FRESHMEN TEAMS EARN TWO VICTORIES EACH AT GREATER AUSTIN TOURNEY'S FIRST DAY

PFLUGERVILLE, Texas-- The Pflugerville junior varsity and freshman Gold (A) squads both stayed undefeated at 5-0 on the young season with two victories each at the Greater Austin Area Classic Thursday.

The JV and freshmen tourneys are only round-robin Classic competitions with play concluding on Friday with a final game for both Panther teams.

The JV faces Westlake at 10 a.m. Friday at P'ville's Panther Gym while the freshmen face Westlake at 8:30 a.m., also at P'ville.

Thursday, the Panther JV defeated Rouse 72-28 and Akins, 67-12. Against Rouse, the JV led 42-20 at intermission in route to the win. Sophomore post Ariana Marks and junior guard Destini Oakmon led the way with 13 points each. In the win over Akins, P'ville led 27-0 after the first quarter. Marks and sophomore guard Stephanie Onyeje finished with 10 points apiece.

Guard Alyssa Washington was the top scorer in each game for the Panther freshmen, netting 23 points in a 46-18 win over Rouse and another 23 in the 63-13 victory over Akins. Guard Laura Perez and post Osayuwa Evbayiro chipped in with eight points each in the win over Rouse, while Mariah Gardner had 11 points against Akins.
