Posted Dec 21/10 - Pflugerville moves to 2-0 in District action with a 58-43 victory over Round Rock; sophomore guard Taliyah Brooks (16 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists) led the Panthers
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Out-scoring the Lady Dragons by a 16-4 margin in the final quarter, the state-ranked Pflugerville Panthers took a three-point lead and extended it en route to a 58-43 victory over Round Rock Tuesday night in District 16-5A play at Round Rock HS.

Panther sophomore point guard Taliyah Brooks notched her first varsity double-double as she led all scorers with a season-high 16 points and pulled down a team-high and career-high 10 rebounds. Brooks also added a game-high and season-best seven assists.

The Panthers moved to 14-3 overall and are 2-0 in District action. Round Rock, which was held scoreless for a span of four minutes in the final quarter by a tough pressing Panther defense, is now 12-5 overall and 1-1 in the district. The Lady Dragons stayed close for the first three quarters by hitting from long range as they connected on seven three pointers, going 7-for-13 from long range.

Joining Brooks in double-figure scoring were junior forward Itiana Taylor (14 points, six rebounds) and senior forward Adesuwa Ebomwonyi (11 points). Junior guard Ari Booth chipped in with seven points. Both Taylor and Brooks had four steals each.

Pflugerville trailed after the first period, 13-6, hampered by early turnovers and a three-for-12 shooting effort. The Panthers turned it around in the second period, tying the game at 17-17 with two Taylor free throws with 3:41 to play. With P'ville down 21-20, Brooks gave Pflugerville its first lead - and the lead for good, 23-21, when she drained a three-pointer from the top of the circle with 1:18 left in the quarter. Pflugerville led at intermission, 27-24.

In the first half, the Panthers out-rebounded Round Rock, 18-8 and had seven steals to the Lady Dragons' two.

The Panthers held the three-point lead (42-39) entering the final period before a Curteisha Woods 3-pointer opened up their lead to six, 47-41 with 4:31 to go. The Panthers then held Round Rock scoreless over the next four-plus minutes, as Round Rock missed four shots and had three turnovers in seven straight possessions. In that span, Pflugerville scored 10 unanswered points, capped by a Brooks fast break layup to give the Panthers a 54-41 lead with 2:02 to go.

The Panthers dominated on the boards, out-rebounding Round Rock, 37-16, and had 15 steals to Round Rock's four.

Pflugerville now breaks for the Christmas holiday and returns to action at the Mansfield Rotary Tournament in Mansfield, Texas from Monday-Wednesday, Dec. 27-29.
