The Cloverdale Spurs played in a must win game on Friday and boy did they deliver. Facing a very good Vancouver Monarch team, the Cloverdale Spurs scored a well-deserved 4-2 victory. Kyle Starinieri pitched a fantastic 5 and 1/3 innings, allowing zero walks and striking out 5 batters. Nick Laflamme came in to relieve Kyle and pitched the remaining 1 and 2/3 innings, allowing no runs.
The first three innings were scoreless for both teams. In the 4th inning, Reese started off with a single, followed by a Nick single. Jeff bunted with runners at first and second. Reese scored on an overthrow to third. Jeff and Nick moved to second and third. Connor Folick came up with a clutch single to score Nick while Jeff moved to third . A great single by Brent drove in Jeff for another run and moved Connor to third. Unfortunately Brent was caught leaning on a lead off and was caught in a run down between 1st and 2nd. Bryce Derton laid a great bunt to score Connor. Score after 4 innings, Spurs 4, Vancouver no score.
Vancouver managed to score two runs in the 5th inning but that was all the Spurs were going to give up today. A Vancouver runner trying to steal second was thrown out by a great throw from Reese Frey to Noah.
The game ended on an exciting play when there was one out and short stop Jeff Godard caught a short fly ball in shallow left field and then threw out a runner on second base that had not tagged up.
Final score, Spurs 4, Monarchs 2 in seven innings.
Next game is noon on Saturday, against the Victoria Black Eagles, who upset the White Rock Mariners in an exciting 10-9, 8 inning game earlier in the day.
