Posted Sep 21/09 - 5 Bulldogs sign pro
The North Georgia Bulldogs lost in the second round of the playoffs this past weekend. They were defeated by the defending league champions 35-15.

The Bulldogs finished the season with an 11-3 record in their first year in the USFL.

According to player and owner Kacee Smith the bad feeling of losing did not last long as five players from the team signed professional contacts with the Augusta Colts.

Quintent Kent, Marcus Reese, Jamal Hall, OJ Taylor and Mike Paige were all signed by the indoor football team. The Colts are a professional indoor football team that play under the same rules as in the Arena Football League did. The players are paid each game week, provided with housing, and also feed daily.

"I am excited to be signed by the Colts and I'm looking forward to the new opportunities presented ahead,” said Page. “I would also like to thank the North Georgia Bulldogs, in particular Kacee Smith, for giving me the opportunity to be seen and a chance to take my skills to the next level."

Paige was the 2008 MVP for the Bulldogs.

“I am very excited about this experience,” said Taylor. “I hope I go on and make everyone proud who helped make this possible."

"This is really a big deal. I am so happy for these guys,” said Smith “It has been a long process, but I am glad it worked out for them."

As for the Bulldogs, they are wasting no time preparing for next year’s season.

In 2010 the Bulldogs will kick off their fourth year of football here in Gordon County. Players and coaches are excited and optimistic about next year’s season.

"Overall I feel that the season was a success. We were 11-3 and we got guys to the next level,” said quarterback Lacey Herring. “We fell short on how we wanted to end the season, but we got a lot of positives to build on for next year."

Local stand out T.J. Hamilton is looking forward to next year

"The Bulldogs are my family and playing with them has been a blessing. Playing with the Bulldogs this year was amazing,” he said. “We showed everyone in our league and in the nation that we are for real. Being a part of that has been nothing but a blessing to me"

The Bulldogs are currently working on hosting a charity bowl game for the reconstruction of the GEM Theater. A locaton and date for the game will be announced soon.

The team is looking forward to next season and getting started with early tryouts as soon as December. The Bulldogs are hoping to tap into the local talent of the Calhoun area even more for next season.

“The Bulldogs would like to thank all of their fans, sponsors, players and coaches this season and wish good luck to all the local high school football teams this season,” said Smith.
