Posted Sep 23/14 - Information About Weight Certification

The UIL mandates that in order to compete in wrestling, each participant must undergo a weight certification assessment.  The assessment is a scientific method of determining an athlete’s lowest possible weight while maintaining proper hydration and an appropriate body fat percentage.

This process begins with a hydration test checked by urine.  If an athlete fails the test, they cannot continue with the assessment.  If the athlete passes, they continue to the next step which is to be weighed.  After being weighed, athletes will have their body fat assessed by a trained medical professional using a set of calipers.  The athlete’s weight and body fat numbers are put into the National Wrestling Coaches’ Association Weight Management Computer.  The computer will give the athlete’s lowest possible weight class.  This lowest weight is not a recommended weight.  It is just the lowest a wrestler can compete during the year.

Check the UIL’s helpful links for more information.

Tips for passing the hydration test http://www.uiltexas.org/files/athletics/hydration-assessment-preparation.pdf

Our first assessment is scheduled for Wednesday, October 1st at 7:00pm at Morton Ranch HS.  It is highly recommended that you make this date.  Missing this date may result in a wrestler not being able to compete for the first week or two of the season.

We will not be working out in either athletic period or allowing any after school workouts on Wednesday, 10/1 to help facilitate passing the hydration testing.  Here are a few quick tips to help pass the hydration test.  Do not work out for 24 hours before the test.  Eat a light breakfast and lunch on the day of the test, but do not consume any food for at lease 6 hours before the test.  It does not help to dring a large quantity of water before the test.  What you need to do is have several cycles of water intake followed by urination.  Lightly colored or clear urine is the goal.  Take several days off from any vitamins as they can effect color.
