Posted Dec 19/12 - Austin American Statesman profile: Faces off the Field: Diana Omozee, Pflugerville senior forward

The Monday, Dec. 19 edition of the Austin America Statesman ran a profile of Pflugerville 5-11 senior forward Diana Omozee in the weekly high school "Faces off the Field" profile section. See the online profile and Q&A with Omozee, who signed to play collegiate ball with Big 12 Conference member Oklahoma State. Below, you also can view the full transcript of the Q&A which was conducted by AAS sports reporter Rick Cantu.

What has been your favorite basketball memory from high school?

DO: It would have to be our win over THESA (Texas Home Educators’ Sports Association in Fort Worth). It’s not every day you get a chance to play a team with a player ranked No. 2 in the country (Moriah Jefferson) in front of a packed house. It was thrilling.

What are your goals for your team?

DO: One team goal is to be one of the last four (Class 5A) teams standing in March, and also to just grow and develop as a team.

What do you remember about the first time you played competitive basketball?

DO: I was in seventh grade and I played on the a team called the 8Ballers. The one that sticks out in my memory is me shooting my first free throw and banging it off the top of the backboard.

What are your college plans?

DO: I signed my national letter of intent on Nov. 14 to play basketball at Oklahoma State University.

If you could have dinner with any four people in the history of the world, who would they be?

DO: Kevin Durant because he’s so cute and I admire his game; Nelson Mandela for his role in world peace and leadership; Marilyn Monroe because she was fearless and feisty; and last but not least, the creator of the perm.

If you had the choice of being all-state in basketball or valedictorian of your class, which would you choose?

DO: I would chose valedictorian because your education is one thing people cannot take away from you. Plus, I enjoy attempting to use big words.

I heard you were born in Nigeria. What would you like to see there if you had the opportunity to visit?

DO: I would love to see the hospital I was born in, and I’d want to see all the cousins I’ve never had a chance to meet.

What makes the girls basketball team at Pflugerville so competitive every year?

DO: It’s hard not to be competitive when you play against some of the best players in Texas every day in practice. Our coaches’ dedication to the game of basketball is one of the driving factors in our success. We watch a lot of film — not only on our opposing teams but on ourselves — to see what we do right and wrong.

Tell me something about yourself that most people don’t know.

DO: Most people don’t know I played soccer for 12 years, but I stopped playing last spring to focus on basketball.

Outside of athletics, what do you do for fun?

DO: Surprisingly, I love reading. I’m a sucker for any book with suspense.
