Posted Nov 29/12 - Panther varsity opens Pflugerville Invitational action with wins over Lake Travis and state-ranked The Woodlands

PFLUGERVILLE, Texas -- The No. 2 state-ranked Pflugerville Panthers continued their winning ways Thursday with two pool play victories in their own Pflugerville Invitational. The Panthers opened up with a 63-20 win over Lake Travis and then defeated the state's No. 14-ranked 5A team, The Woodlands, 51-27 behind 13 points and four steals from senior forward Diana Omozee. The wins move Pflugerville to 12-0.

The 23rd annual Pflugerville Invitational features a varsity, junior varsity and freshman tournament. Play continues Friday, Nov. 30 and concludes with championship round action on Saturday, Dec. 1.

In the win over Lake Travis, the balanced scoring attack with led by senior guard Amy Staha who finished with nine points. Four others scored seven points - senior guard Taylor Ross, senior forwards Diana Omozee and Jonelle Smith and junior guard Alyssa Echols. Echols also had a game-high four steals.

Against The Woodlands, the Panthers trailed 11-10 after the first quarter before exploding for a 19-4 run in the second quarter to take a 29-15 lead into halftime. In the first three minutes of the second quarter the Panthers went on a 9-0 run and forced five turnovers. Two free throws by Echols and a short jumper by Omozee pushed the lead to 25-13 with 3:35 left in the period.

The game against The Woodlands was a rematch of last year's state area championship playoffs, won by The Woodlands, 51-43.

Senior guard Amy Staha added eight points and four rebounds while senior guard Taylor Ross (6 points) pulled down a team-high and season-high eight rebounds.
