Posted Dec 28/10 - Pflugerville moves into Mansfield Rotary championship game with 42-34 victory over Mansfield Summit; faces Canyon HS at 7 p.m. Wednesday for title
MANSFIELD, Texas -- The state-ranked Pflugerville Panthers advanced to Wednesday's championship game of the 2010 Mansfield Rotary Invitational Tournament with a 42-34 win over Mansfield Summit HS Wednesday evening. See Mansfield Rotary Invitational Tournament website for all tourney information.

The Panthers are 18-3 overall and 4-0 in Invitational play and carry a seven-game win streak.

Pflugerville will face undefeated state power Canyon HS (16-0), a decisive winner over Mansfield Timberview in the other semifinal. The Pflugerville-Canyon game is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday at Mansfield HS. The Panthers are ranked No. 11 in the the State 5A TABC/Tex Preps Basketball Magazine poll, while the Canyon Lady Eagles hold the No. 2 ranking in the 4A division of that same poll.

Timberview and Canyon met in last year's finals, with Timberview winning 49-47. An annual participant at this December Rotary Invitational tourney, Pflugerville's best finishes were fourth-place in both 2005 and 2006.

Great defensive pressure by the Panthers held Summit (15-6), ranked 11th in the TABC/Tex Preps 4A standings, to just 11 points in the second and third quarters. Pflugerville led 24-17 at intermission and then extended that lead to 34-24 after three periods.

Junior forward Itiana Taylor was the lone Panther to reach double-figure scoring, finishing with 10 points. Senior forward Adesuwa Ebomwonyi added eight points and a team-high 11 rebounds, notching double-digit rebounds for the third time in four Invitational games.

Senior guards Curtiesha Woods and Raveen Burton each had seven points, while sophomore point guard Taliyah Brooks had five points and team-highs of four assists and three steals.

PANTHER NOTES: The Panthers are playing this tournament without the services of All-State senior post Nneka Enemkpali, a University of Texas signee who is sidelined nursing an injury ... Enemkpali is P'ville's leading scorer (12.1 ppg), rebounder (7.1 rpg) and shot blocker (2.6 bpg) ... Panther head coach Nancy Walling is a graduate Canyon HS, the Panthers' opponent in Wednesday's title game ... Walling helped lead Canyon to two Texas state basketball championships while a Lady Eagle standout before playing collegiate ball at national powerhouse University of Texas.
