Posted Jul 24/13 - The Braves (week 15)

The Braves entered week 15 with only 2 games left on the seasonal schedule. 1st up was the Tri-City Indians. The Braves had to wait an hour before the umpires arrived but once the game was on the Braves showed they were ready & facing 1 of the leagues top chucker's, Jacob Doyle, in the 1st Braves slugger Michael Stovman hit a double & was driven in by Seth Injates who hit a dub as well, the Braves next batter Joseph Siniscalchi smashed a ball into the trees at Bird Field giving the Braves a 3-0 lead. The Braves Starting Pitcher James Bradwell was throwing lights out & in 4 innings of work he struck out 9 batters, the Indians added 1 more in the 3rd. With the score 3-2 for the Braves in the 7th inning the Braves Parker Opdahl scored on a Michael Stovman RBI, a run that proved to be very crucial. The Indians mounted a comeback in the bottom of the 7th, scoring 1 off a Bo Laslo double & Mathew Clay double RBI, with 2 runners on & 2 outs the Braves walked Jordan Dray intentionally to load the bases, then Braves closer (Seth Injates) struck out the next batter to secure a 4-3 Braves victory, besides the above mentioned, the Braves offensively got solid contributions from Nico Patella, Duncan Stevenson & Luke Petreny; defensively Mack Dungate caught a good game, Sammy Googs made some solid plays at first, same as Niko Millas in the 4 spot, while Michael Stovman gave a solid inning of relief before giving way to closer Injates! The very next day the Braves played the impressive Vancouver Mounties & again were humbled, this time 17-5 by a well oiled machine who could be the team to beat up in Kamloops if they survive the pool of death! The Braves were led offensively by Niko Millas's 2 doubles, Seth Injates smacking 3 singles, Mack Dungate hitting a dub & single, Sammy Guglielmucci hitting 2 for 2, plus Jospeh Siniscalchi also got on base 3 times!

The Braves now get ready to qaulify via the 6 team Mini-Tournament in Victoria (Carnarvon Park, # 5 On the Ball Park list) facing the surging Okanagan Athletics, 6pm Fiday July 26th! 2 Teams of 6 (Burnaby, Victoria Red, Victoria Black, Nanaimo, N. Island & Okanagan), will qaulify for the Provincials in Kamloops the following weekend.

Posted Jul 21/13 - The Braves (week 14)

The Braves entered week 14 with a game against the 1st place Richmond Chuckers, the Braves went head to head for 3 innings before Braves Starter Michael Stovman had to come out of the game due to injury, the Chuckers batters took advantage of the Braves misfortune & rolled on to a 12-0 victory! The Braves then faced the LA Dodgers of Aldergrove & again it was a close game, the Dodgers defense halted any runs being scored against & got some timely hits & scored 1 in the 3rd, 3 in the 6th & 2 in the 7th & defeated the Braves 6-0 in a must win game for the Dodgers who are battling for the last automatic qualification spot. The next day the Braves had a doubleheader vs the Cloverdale Spurs & the Braves came to play in game 1, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the 1st; lead off batter Niko Millas hit a double was moved around to score on a sacrifice by Michael Stovman. The Spurs got 4 off Braves Starter Joseph Siniscalchi in the 2nd, led by a few defensive errors in the field, the Braves added 1 more in the 3rd off a Joseph Siniscalchi homer. The Braves added 4 more in the top of the 4th to take the lead, James Bradwell who singled was driven in by Sammy Guglielmucci, then Parker Opdahl smacked a bases loaded double driving in 2 & himself was hit home off another Niko Millas hit! The Spurs took the lead again in their half of the inning again off some errors & timely hits scoring 4, then adding 1 more in the 5th & 6th innings scoring 10 runs, the Braves tried to rally in the 7th, when Joseph drove in Niko but the Spurs closer shut the door the rest of the way to give the Braves another loss, 10-7. In the 2nd game the Braves starter was scored on 6 times in the 2nd inning & the Braves bats couldn't string together any hits and another loss loomed this time 12-2.

Bantam Ball Parks & Their Fair

This coach (Mo) enjoys coaching the game, but also has a secret passion for Ball Park Fair (if there is any) & below is my take on The Best Ballparks I experienced, but also their fair (that is food!) on the 2013 Braves away games & road trips.

  1. Kamloops Riverdogs, Macarthur Island Park; Best Ball Park by far, love the field, dugouts & Bullpen! My choice for best food as well. In the Mornings they served a delicious Egg & Ham with Cheddar Cheese Breakfast Muffin (awesome is the best way to describe this early morning fair). Dogs & Burgers are good too!
  2. LA Dodgers, Aldergrove Park; 2nd best park in my opinion, love the deepness & dugouts are pretty good, The food is good, this is the place to get a BBQ Smokie! Had a darn good Bacon n Egger here on the return trip!
  3. Tri-City Indians, Bird Field; Great Park, excellent facilities, seems like a tilted field , dugouts are spacious; bullpen is top notch; has a Pajo's on site (I like getting fries or onion rings), but this place is for seafood lovers.........
  4. Richmond Chuckers, Blundell Field: Deep field, spacious dugouts, decent Bullpen; Food was great, hospitality was friendly!
  5. Victoria Black Eagles, Carnarvon Park; Good deep field, dugouts were funky, bullpen needs work! My burger was great!
  6. White Rock Tritons, SSAP: I've got to hand it to Jordan, he has the field in top notch condition! Didn't eat here........
  7. Nanaimo Pirates, Robins Park. Field was OK, dugout smallish, needs a better bullpen; felt very sorry for the neighbours of that Park, (some angry guy had his truck hit by foul balls 4 times before he came out to complain & move it, then while complaining 2 more hit, yikes!). Great half time BBQ, had the double double (Cheeseburger & Hot Dog with a Coke & Dr Pepper, YUM, Yum!).
  8. Abbotsford Angels, Townline Hill Park; Funkiest field, dugouts OK, couldn't get on field until 45 minutes before game time because it was locked up! Food was great thanks to Corlee Opdahl, Giselle Patella & the Braves parents who got Potato Chips & Deli Meat's for Bunwich's (Yum, Yum!)! Thanks Corlee for spearheading that!
  9. Cloverdale Spurs, Cloverdale Ball Park; Love the spacious field & facilities are good, usually do the BBQ double double here, when the BBQ is going; good selection of Candies!
  10. N. Island Royals, Highland Park: Field wasn't that great but was deep, no bullpen; dugouts were OK; but the hospitality was fantastic. The BBQ dogs were pretty good too, I went back for seconds! If only the umping was half as good as the food, we would have had a chance & they would have had a higher rating..............
  11. Victoria Red Eagles, Rotary Park; field was good, dugout different story; facilities & food was fantastic, bullpen was very adeqaute! Had a brunch time Bacon n Egger with cheese!
  12. Okanagan Athletic's, Edith Gay Park: Field was good to the Braves, dugout was small, Bullpen? The food was top notch, had 2 Cheeseburgers here!
  13. Vancouver Mounties, Nanaimo Park; Deep Park; food is OK.......

The Braves returned to action after a 2 week lay-off & were a little rusty in the 1st game vs the White Rock Tritons, The Tritons jumped out to a 3-0 lead, the Braves replied with 3 consecutive hits to score 2 & cut the lead to 1. The Braves Starter gave up 2 hits to start the 4th & with 2 outs the Braves had some errors & the Tritons put up 6 runs to take a commanding lead, the Braves replied with 1 more in their half of the 4th, but the Tritons bats were hot & put up 1 more in the 6th & exploded for 5 in the 7th to win the game 15-3. The Braves in Game 2 handed the ball to Luke Petreny who went 6 & 2/3 innings giving up 5 hits, allowing 2 runs, 1 earned. The Braves bats shook of the Rust from the 1st game & got there bats on the ball more frequently in game 2, in the 1st Niko Millas scored off a Joseph Siniscalchi hit RBI, in the 3rd the Braves added 2 more when Parker Opdahl & Luke Petreny hitting safely, were scored off Michael Stovman & Joseph Siniscalchi RBI's. The Braves gave all the run support Luke needed by adding 3 in the 4th when Parker Opdahl with bases loaded smacked another ball into the outfield scoring 2 Braves (Nico Patella & Sammy Guglielmucci), then Luke Petreny gave himself more breathing room driving in James Bradwell & had all the Runs he needed to pick up another win for the Braves by a 6-2 score!

The Burnaby Braves Bantam AAA team would like to thank Dave Empey & the Vancouver Cannons for hosting the Braves for a training session June 4th, the Braves players enjoyed BP, Infield-Outfield Drills with the Seniors & the Pitching Instruction from Dave, it was a great night for the Braves to see the next level & their practice habits! The Braves opened the week playing the White Rock Tritons, Braves Hurler Michael Stovman pitched a great game givng up 2 runs off 3 hits & sriking out 5 in 5 strong innings. The Braves bats came alive in the top of the 6th scoring 3 runs to take a 5-2 lead off a Joey Siniscalchi over the fence double driving in 2 runs. The Braves closer brought in with a runner already on & gave up a single, then a double by the Triton batter tied the game up sending another Braves game into extra innings. After an error & some passed balls The Tritons scored the winning run in the bottom of the 8th to claim a 6-5 victory. The Braves then played the Dodgers of Langley-Aldergrove & after the Dodgers first batter put one over the fence things looked bleak for the Braves down 2-0 after the 1st. However Braves starter Luke Petreny wasn't fazed and pitched 6 strong innings giving up 3 runs & Closer James Bradwell shut the door the rest of the way. The Braves bats chipped away with 2 in the 2nd to tie the game up after a Sammy Guglielmucci Double. The Braves took the lead in the 4th when Mackenzie Dungate slammed his first homer over the fence this year igniting the Braves line-up & fans, however the Dodgers tied it back up in the 6th with a BB followed by a Double sending the game into extra innings again. In the Bottom of the 9th The Braves Lead off batter James Bradwell made it to second off an error in the outfield & after stealing 3rd, Seth Injantes stepped up & smacked a single driving in the winning run giving the Braves an important win, 4-3!

The Braves playing a 3 game weekend homestand. Starting off picking up a Win beating Kamloops 5-3 in Game 1. Starter Joseph Siniscalchi went 6 strong innings on the mound & the Braves got timely hits including Nico Patella smacking a double driving in 2 runs in the 5th! In the rubber match the Braves bats could not muster up any rally until the 7th, when they shortened the deficit from 8-2 to 8-6 with a runner on & the red hot Michael Stovman up to the plate, but the Braves runner got caught leaning the wrong way & was picked off snuffing out any chance for the comeback! The very next day the Braves played a surging Okanagan Athletic's team & in a great Pitcher's duel, the A's took advantage of some passed balls & an error to score 2 runs, as Braves starter Luke Petreny again produced another gem on the mound giving up 1 hit & only 1 Base on balls; but the difference in this game like most for the Braves has been on the base paths & the Braves added another loss to the standings, 2-1!

The Braves headed to the Island for 3 games over the past weekend. In the opener against the Victoria Red Eagles on Saturday the Braves lost a heartbreaker 3-2 in the bottom of the 7th after tying the game in the top of the 7th inning. Luke Petreny pitched another beauty, but so did the Eagles thrower Crust. The next day the Braves bats remained cold & some sloppy base-running halted any chances of gaining momentum, The Victoria Black Eagles got to Braves starter James Bradwell in the 3rd putting up 3 & followed that up with 3 more in the 4th to cruise to a 10-3 victory. In game 3 the Braves bats started to heat up & had a 3-0 lead but the Black Eagles put up 8 runs in the 3rd & again cruised to a 12-6 victory! Of note offensively this weekend was Michael Stovman going 6 for 8 with 2 doubles.

The Braves entered weak 8 hoping to regain some ground in league play. The Game vs Cloverdale was cancelled due to rain so the Braves had to wait until the weekend for a doubleheader vs Abbotsford. In the 1st game the Braves got off to a good start scoring 2 in the 1st off Niko Millas's single, driven in by Luke Petreny's double & then Luke scored when James Bradwell hit a single. The Angels replied with 1 in the 1st and 2nd then scored 4 in the 3rd. The Braves replied with 2 in the 4th after a Joseph Siniscalchi double & Michael Stovman walk, Nico Patella hit a blooper into the gap to drive in the pair, the Braves closed the gap with a run in the 5th when Seth Injates crossed the plate. The Angels added 1 more in the 6th to take the W by a score of 7-5; James Bradwell Pitched a great game and was the victim of circumstance, the same circumstances the Braves have faced away from Kensington Park most of the year to date. In Game 2 the Braves handed the ball to Luke Petreny who gave up 4 hits in 6 innings but the Angels took advantage of some good base running, passed balls & scored 3 un-earned runs for a 3-0 win as the Braves bats could not muster any sort of rally against the junkball Chucker the Angels Pitched. The next day the Braves hoping to stop a 3 game losing streak visited the LA Dodgers in Aldergrove, the Braves again good off to a good start scoring 1 in the 1st, but things fell apart for the Braves after that, with some misplayed balls in the 3rd allowed the Dodgers to score 8 & 5 more in the 4th, cruising to a 14-1 victory!

The Braves faced the Vancouver Mounties to start the tournament, The Mounties blew the Braves away with a 25-3 win, of note for the Braves in this game was James Bradwell driving in all 3 of the Braves runs & Austin "Ozzy" Smith pitching debut. The Braves looking to advance to the Quarter finals with a must win game versus the Victoria Black Eagles, the Braves got some good pitching & timely hits to claim a 5-1 victory. In the Quarter final the Braves played a hot White Rock Triton team, the Braves bats showed up for this game belting out a season high 17 hits led by Joey Siniscalchi & Sam Guglielmucci (3 hits each) plus Niko Millas, Luke Petreny & James Bradwell (2 hits each), The Braves beat the Tritons 12-7 to advance to the Semi final. The Braves played only 1 game in week 6 against the 1st place Tri-City Indians. The Indians took the lead in bottom of the 2nd scoring 2 off Braves Starter Michael Stovman, but the Braves rallied back with 3 in their 3rd when Joey Siniscalchi smacked a Double driving in 2 & after reaching 3rd, was hit home on a Sac Fly by Michael Stovman. The Braves scored another in the 4th when Sam Guglielmucci smacked a triple and scored on an overthrow at 3rd. The Indians bats chipped away with 2 more in the 5th to tie the game. The Braves had a couple of chances at home plate but on some close calls were called out twice sending the game into extra innngs. In the top of the 9th the Braves put up 5 led by lead off man Niko Millas reaching base, Parker Opdahl drew a walk bringing up the red hot Joey Siniscalchi who was intentionally walked for the 2nd time this game with runners in scoring position to load the bases for Mr Stovman, Michael smashed a single up the middle to give the Braves the lead, and with some solid at bats by Sammy Googs, Nico Patella & Duncan Stevenson kept the drive alive with the Braves putting up 5 in the 9th. The Braves closer Joey Siniscalchi itching for the win walked the 1st 2 batters but settled down to get a double play ball & the Indians last batter grounded out to give the Braves a huge 9-4 win, keeping them on pace with the top 8 teams in a very competative Bantam AAA league! The Braves undeniably played their best ball of the year. Braves starting pitcher Michael Stovman pitched a steller game keeping the Indians slugger off balance with a mix of fastballs, curves and a devastating change up. Braves Slugger Joey Siniscalchi getting 2 intentional walks with runners in scoring position is a testament to his hitting prowess as savvy Indians manager Randy Downes does not walk intentionally without very good reason. The Braves now look forward to the Queen Victoria Wood Bat Tournament in Richmond this coming weekend.

The Chuckers added 4 runs in there half of the 1st, & chipped away with 1 more in the 2nd & took command in the 3rd with 4 more. The Braves bats were stymied by the Chuckers Staff & the game was called in the bottom of the 6th after the Chuckers scored 1 more for the 12-2 mercy victory.

The Braves started week 4 vs. the Mounties and had a rough start as the Mounties put up 10 in the 1st, the Braves fought back but in the end lost 17-5 in a shortened game. The Braves then headed to the Island to play the North Island Royals in Courteney, the Braves starter Michael Stovman pitched a good game, but was robbed as were the Braves bats; the Braves lost 9-2. The next day in Sunny Nanaimo the Braves again faced a young Pirates team, the Braves handed the ball over to Josef Siniscalchi who pitched 6 strong innings & added to his cause with 2 home runs to get a 4-1 victory, the Braves got a gutsy effort from second baseman Ozzy Smith & Catcher Michael Stovman, as well the Braves Outfield made some great defensive plays to stop any Pirate threats. In the rematch the Braves bats started off hot scoring 4 in the 1st but the Pirates replied with 4 of there own. Then the Pirates put up 2 in the 4th, plus 4 more in the 5th to gain a sizable lead, the Braves could not mount a comeback although Duncan Stevenson smashed a double into the gap, James Bradwell smacking 2 but the Braves could not string a rally & lost 10-4 giving the Pirates there 1st victory of the year and spoiling the Braves road trip, going 1-2. Defensively the Braves were very good on the weekend, Infielders taking balls off the body & still making the play (that's why they tell you to get in front of the ball, I guess), Outfielders tracking down & diving for balls to rob the Pirates of some sure hits, it was good to watch.

The Burnaby Braves entered week 3 in league action facing the cross town rival Tri-City Indians led by their long time BC Minor coach Randy Downes. The Indians jumped out to an early lead when lead-off batter Jordan Dray put one over the right field fence, the Indians added 1 more in the inning & 1 more in the 3rd. Indians starter Jacob Doyle was throwing heat & with a nasty curve curving, mowed down the Braves sluggers until the 5th when Joey Siniscalchi got on base with a single & Niko Millas hit a double to score the Braves first run. The Indians then brought in Jordan Dray to shut the Braves bats out and stomp out any comeback, with the Indians defeating the Braves by a 4-1 score. In the weekend series with N. Island Royals the Braves Starter couldn't get on track giving up 3 in the first and the Royals chipped away with 2 more in the 3rd and 3 in 5th, went on to take the 1st game 8-4 even though Braves sluggers Luke Petreny (2 doubles) & Seth Injantes (3 for 3) bats were hot, the Braves line-up could not string any rallys together. In the immediate rematch the Braves bats came alive scoring 3 in the 3rd & 4th and adding 1 more crucial run in the 5th, & Braves starter Luke Petreny kept the Royal bats at bay; the Royals put together a 4 run rally in the 6th and were threatening to add more with runners on and none out the Braves brought in Pitcher Michael Stovman who struck out 2 to stop the attack & give the Braves a split with the Royals winning 7-6 in game 2. On Sunday the Braves played a young team from Nanaimo, the Braves jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the 1st, but the Pirates bats came to hit and took a 9-6 lead into to the bottom of the 7th inning, but only after a spectacular highlight reel game saving diving catch by Braves center-fielder Josef Siniscalchi in top of the 7th. The Braves sluggers inspired by "The Catch" held a brief meeting before they took their turn at bats and led by Sammy Guglielmucci drawing a walk off the Pirates hurler (Dumont), the Braves Niko Millas (4 runs) reached on an error, followed by a Seth Injantes walk and the Braves were threatening with the heart of the order coming up with none out, after a K and a pop up to the catcher it was up to Mack Dungate to drive in the runs with 2 outs, a spot he was in recently against Richmond a week earlier, Mack succeded & smacked a triple to tie the game & standing on third base, he now represented the winning run, Mack crossed the plate to give the Braves another win when the Braves next batter Michael Stovman blooped a single into left field for a 10-9 come from behind walk off win.

The Braves players & coaching staff would like to acknowledge & thank the Braves parents! The fact we got 3 games in during this very wet & rainy weekend was only due to the outstanding efforts of the Braves parents maintaining, grooming and caring for the field and all the drainage control, led by chief field crew member Randy Dungate and the rest of the Braves family who helped out; job well done & much appreciated!

Posted Apr 23/13 - The Braves (week 2)

The Braves went into week 2 with a 4 game homestand at Kensington Park. First up was the Pre-season favorites Richmond Chuckers. The Chuckers opened the scoring getting 1 off Braves starter Sam Guglielmucci in the 2nd, the Braves replied when Seth Injantes put his first homer of the year over the fence and took the lead with a 6 run inning in the bottom of the 3rd with some solid hits from Joey Siniscalchi & Mack Dungate, both driving in 2 runs each. The Braves lost the lead in the 5th due to some fielding issues as the Chuckers put up 5. The Braves showed some resiliency by putting up 2 more in 7th but fell short losing 11-9. Next up was a doubleheader versus the Victoria Red Eagles who stiffled the Braves bats and took the opening game 5-0. In the following game the Braves bats came alive led by Luke Petreny's 1st homer of the season, as well Luke also pitched 7 strong innings striking out 10 to help the Braves claim a 4-1 victory! The next day against the Victoria Black Eagles the Braves bats came out firing when Lead-off batter Luke Petreny slammed his 2nd homer of the year, and with some solid more at bats and a strong effort by Starting Pitcher Michael Stovman the Braves carried a 7-2 lead into the top of the 5th inning when the game was cancelled due to rain. Unfortunately this game was not a complete game due to it being cancelled before the Red Eagles completed their 5th inning at bats and will continue from where it left off at a later date TBD!

In the 2nd game of the double header vs the A's, the Braves coaching staff gave the ball back to opening day starter Seth Injantes who pitched 5 strong innings giving up 1 hit and striking out 9 to claim his 1st victory as the Braves bats came alive scoring 15 runs in 6 innings, including 3 players scoring 3 times each (Luke Petreny, Nico Patella & Austin Smith). Braves sluggers Mack Dungate driving in 3 & Duncan Stevenson driving in 2 with some solid at bats! The 2013 Braves saw their first action of the season, winning 2 & losing 2. In the first game vs White Rock Tritons. Down 7-2 in the bottom of the seventh the Braves got some timely hits and with the bases loaded, Michael Stovman smashed a bases clearing double to tie the game up and with a play at the plate Michael ended up on third base with none out, the unfortunate White Rock closer then balked in the winning run to give the Braves their first victory of the year. In the Braves next game vs Okotoks Red Dawgs of Calgary Alberta, the Braves again came from behind, winning 8-4. The next day the Braves faced the home team Kamloops Riverdogs and were leading for most of the game, in the bottom of the 5th some untimely errors allowed the Riverdogs to score 3 and take the lead, due to time limit rules the Braves could not muster a comeback and lost 8-7. Posted Dec 14/13 - NEW 15U AAA COACHING STAFF!!!

BMBA IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE:

Burnaby Minor Baseballl Association is thrilled to announce their 15U AAA coaching staff for the 2014 season.

Nick Senior

Nick grew up in Surrey, B.C. playing his youth baseball for Newton Minor.  He played one season of Bantam AAA at Newton before moving on to the White Rock Tritons organization for the remainder of his high school career.  While in the Tritons program Nick struggled with a shoulder injury that sidelined him for a good portion of his BCPBL career.  He ended up having shoulder surgery and recovered well enough to have the UBC coaching staff recruit him and offer him a scholarship to play for the Thunderbirds.  While at UBC, Nick played 3 seasons for the varsity baseball team.  His last season as a junior was his most successful, as he was the starting left fielder and was a middle of the order threat in the lineup.  At UBC, Nick majored in sociology while working towards his Bachelor of Arts degree.  Nick has been instructing with Last Raps Baseball Corp. since the fall of 2010 which has given him invaluable experience in dealing with youth baseball players between the ages of 8-18 years old.  He enjoys being able to give back to the young players coming up and is excited to have the opportunity to coach at this age level among the best 14 and 15 year old ballplayers in the province.

Scott Piesche

Scott grew up in Surrey, B.C. and played Newton Minor Baseball for 7 years.  During those 7 seasons he won 2 provincial championships, 1 national championship, and represented B.C. in the 2008 Midget westerns.  Upon graduation of high school he enrolled at Douglas College into their Sport Science program.  While at Douglas College he played on the baseball team for 2 seasons.  Scott was a relief pitcher for Douglas and put together 2 solid seasons coming out of their bullpen against some of the toughest Junior College competition in the U.S.  Scott came out of Douglas College with successful graduation of a Sport Science Diploma.  In the last few years Scott has gained some key coaching experience by coaching junior boys high school volleyball for 2 seasons at Sullivan Heights Secondary as well as helping out with baseball clinics put on by Douglas College at the Richmond Oval.

Paul Schipizky

Paul grew up in Vancouver, B.C. playing his youth baseball for Dunbar Little League before moving over to Vancouver Minor to play his Peewee and Bantam years.  He then moved on to play for the North Shore Twins of the BCPBL from 2007-2009 winning back-to-back-to-back championships with them.  After finishing his high school career on a high note Paul went down to California to play his college ball with the Pasadena City College Lancers.  While at Pasadena College, Paul studied business management.  Paul’s coaching experience consists of helping out with Dunbar’s 2005/2006 Little League All-star teams as well as helping instruct various baseball clinics in the Vancouver area.
