HORICON — Shaun Dickinson's grand slam capped a nine-run fifth inning that ended Horicon's 13-1 Northern ECAL baseball win over visiting Mayville Thursday night in five innings.
"What a frustrating game," Mayville coach Scott Hurst said. "So many simple mistakes that should not have been made.
"We were right in the game and in the blink of an eye, the wheels fall off in that fifth inning."
Andy Mueller picked up the win by striking out seven in five innings of work. Mike Gionet allowed three earned runs in four innings before the hosts worked over the Mayville bullpen.
"Gio threw pretty well tonight, which was encouraging," Hurst said. "That's one positive thing we can take from this game."
Horicon took an early 2-0 lead in the first with the help of a pair of Mayville's seven errors. Gionet's RBI double cut the lead in half in the third but a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly would give Horicon a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the frame.
Kevin Goard came on for Gionet but gave up a hit and four walks. Randy Hurst then took over and was greeted by RBI singles from Mike Michalovitz and Adam Bunkoske before Dickinson finished off the contest.
Mayville (1-2 North) hosts Hartford Monday.
Horicon (2-0) hosts Lomira/Theresa tonight.
