single base hit and several fielding errors.
\n
\nWith runners at first a

DESCRIPTION:The Pecatonica Viking defense kept Monticello scoreless in the
first inning with three back-to-back outs. Then\, Pec'\;s T. Gilson le
d off the batters and earned a base on balls. Gilson would later score the
first run of the game--and the only one of the 1st inning--on a double hi
t by L. McKeon.
\n
\nIn the top of the 2nd\, Monticello would take the le

am'\;s first run and a sacrifice brought in another. In the bottom of

y and J. Tollakson'\;s double.
\n
\nIn the 3rd\, Monticello batters h
it two singles\, but were unable to score. However\, Pecatonica batters wo

and McKeon across home plate. When N. Loyd was awarded first base on balls
\, two runners were again in a position to score. G. Daly hit a short grou
nder to the left of the mound and reached first on a fielder'\;s choic

Safe...because the catcher dropped the ball. Meanwhile\, Daly had rounded
second\, prompting the catcher to throw to third. But after Monticello
9\;s third baseman missed the ball\, Daly too would score.
\n
\nIn the 4t
h\, Monticello'\;s only score occurred when A. Hefty was able to dive
past catcher N. Loyd after being caught in a squeeze play.
\n
\nIn the 5t
h\, Monticello scored three runs on a series of walks and an error by Peca
tonica'\;s second baseman\, G. Daly. But\, with two outs\, bases loade
d and the go ahead run on first\, J. Scoville fielded a grounder for an un
assisted third out at first base. In the bottom of the 5th\, Pecatonica re
sponded with an RBI on C. Norton'\;s sacrifice\, and two RBI'\;s o
n T. Gilson'\;s single.

DESCRIPTION:Pecatonica chalked up its first loss of the season in a tight g
ame that wasn'\;t decided until the bottom of the last inning.
\n
\nIn
the 1st inning\, Mt. Horeb #2 managed to get two runners to base on walks
\, but Pecatonica'\;s starting pitcher\, J. Scoville\, struck out thre
e others to close out the top of the inning. So\, Pecatonica got on the sc
oreboard first when D. Conwell'\;s double to left field knocked in N.
Loyd.
\n
\nIn the 2nd\, the lead would change when Mt. Horeb batters got
up to bat. First\, they loaded the bases on walks. Then\, the first run to
score was on another walk\, and a change of pitchers didn'\;t help. P
ecatonica'\;s S. McVay took the mound and walked in two more runs befo
re he left the mound citing pain in his thumb. The next relief pitcher was
D. Conwell who hit the first batter he faced before striking out the next
two\, giving the Vikings a chance at bat. Pecatonica'\;s N. Spink sco
red the only run for the Vikings thanks to a single hit to left centerfiel
d by J. Hendrickson.
\n
\nBehind by two\, Pecatonica would rely on its own
hitters in the 3rd inning to tie the game\, beginning with a double poppe
d over the shortstop'\;s head by J. Melvin\, a single for an RBI by J.
Scoville\, a single by N. Loyd\, and a sacrifice fly to right field by T.
Gilson for another RBI.
\n
\nIn the 4th\, the Vikings again took the lead
by capitalizing on walks and another single by J. Hendrickson\, which kno
cked in two runs. Defensively\, Pecatonica'\;s catcher\, T. Gilson wou
ld play a unique roll in an unusual double-play. With one out and two runn
ers at first and second\, a Mt. Horeb batter hit an infield grounder. Firs
t baseman J. Scoville fielded the ball\, but unable to beat the baserunner
to first\, and seeing a runner rounding third for home\, Scoville threw t
he ball to Gilson who tagged the runner for out #2. But then with another
runner advancing toward third\, Gilson attempted to throw him out at third
but failed. However\, when third baseman\, D. Clark\, missed Gilson'\
;s throw\, the runner opted to head for home. Clark was able to retrieve t
he ball in time and throw it to Gilson who tagged the runner out at home p
late for the final out of the inning.
\n
\nIn the 5th\, Mt. Horeb #2 woul
d again tie the game. Facing new relief pitcher\, N. Loyd\, the first two
runners made it to base on balls. The next made it to first on a fielder
039\;s choice. Loyd struck out the fourth batter. But\, with bases loaded\
, the fifth batter hit a long fly ball to right field\, knocking in one ru
n. A fielding error on the part of right fielder\, S. McVay\, resulted in
a second run scoring on that same play.
\nWhen it was Pecatonica'\;s
turn at bat\, the Vikings managed to get two runners on base with a hit an
d an error\, but the next three batters got out.
\n
\nSo the game would b
e decided in the 6th inning\, and Mt. Horeb #2 capitalized on walks for th
e second time in the game by loading the bases. A wild pitch that hit a ba
tter sent the winning run across home plate\, before Pecatonica recorded i

but\, after the first two batters struck out and with the tying run on fir
st\, the final batter grounded out.

A wild pitch that hit a ba
tter sent the winning run across home plate\, before Pecatonica recorded i
ts third out of the inning. The Vikings still had one final chance at bat
but\, after the first two batters struck out and with the tying run on fir
st\, the final batter grounded out.

batters\; the 6th out came when D. Clark caught a high fly ball to left c

un lead in the bottom of the 3rd\, thanks in part to a triple by J. Melvin
and a single by J. Hendrickson.
\n

DESCRIPTION:The number 4 seemed to be the key to this game as Pec#1 hosted
the game against the visiting Mt. Horeb #2 team.
\n
\nIn the 1st\, with t
wo walks and two singles\, Mt. Horeb batters would bring only one of four
runners across home plate\, leaving three on base. Pec#1 retaliated with t
wo walks (D. Conwell and J. Melvin)\, two singles by T. Gilson and G. Dale
y\, plus a double by J. Scoville (for 2 RBIs) to end the inning at 2-to-1
Pec.
\n
\nIn the top of the 2nd\, Mt. Horeb #2 regained the lead with a se
ries of three singles and by capitalizing on a couple of errors. Pec batte
rs managed to match the three singles\, but could only send two runners ho
me...thus tying the game at 4.
\n
\nIn the 3rd\, Mt. Horeb #2 would again
take the lead by taking advantage of numerous errors by Pec infielders. Up
by two\, they would hold Pec scoreless in the bottom of the inning.
\n
\n
However\, in the 4th\, Pec returned the favor\, keeping Mt Horeb #2 scorel
ess. Then\, in the bottom of the 4th\, Pec rallied to put the game away as
Pec batters found the strike zone. The hitters include: singles by D. Con
well\, T. Gilson\, J. Scoville\, J. Melvin\, G. Daley\, N. Gilbertson...a
triple by G. Daley that earned him 2 RBIs...and a grand slam home run by D

DESCRIPTION:The final match-up between Mt Horeb #2 and Pec#1 would be close
...until the 5th inning. This time Mt. Horeb #2 hosted the Vikings with th
e home team taking an early lead in the 1st. After keeping Pec#1 off the b
oard\, the first Mt Horeb batter shocked Pec'\;s defense with an in-th
e-park home run on the first pitch. A few walks and a double later helped
increase Mt Horeb'\;s lead to 4-0. A bit of controversy erupted in the
1st inning when\, with a runner on first and only one out\, the Mt. Horeb
batter popped an in-field fly toward second base. The umpire didn'\;t
call the batter out (per league rules)\, second baseman G. Daley dropped
the fly\, which enable the batter to reach first\, but he did retrieve the
ball in time to tag the runner headed to second. The next batter\, howeve
r\, struck out so the inning ended with Mt. Horeb ahead by four\; and Pec&
#039\;s coaches informed the Pec players that the in-field fly rule would
not be observed in the game and to play accordingly.
\n
\nPec#1 then battl
ed back in the 2nd by scoring 5 runs on a series of walks and back-to-back
2-RBI singles hit by N. Loyd and J. Scoville. S. Swenson also reached bas
e on a single in that inning. Though Pec would hold Mt. Horeb scoreless in
the bottom of the 2nd\, Mt. Horeb would return the favor in the top of th
e 3rd and then score one run to tie the game at 5.
\n
\nIn the 4th\, Pec
again took the lead when A. Kovacs (who'\;d been awarded first base on
balls) and N. Loyd (reaching first on a single) crossed home plate. N. Lo
yd would then take the mound as relief pitcher and hold Mt. Horeb scoreles
s in the 4th by striking out two batters. (The third out was an in-field f
ly caught by J. Tollackson.)
\n
\nThen in the 5th\, Pec batters found the
strike zone and put the game away with a rally that began with a triple b
y N. Gilbertson (who'\;d hit another triple later in the same inning).
The following four batters would walk\, bringing in Gilbertson to score a
nd keep the bases loaded for N. Loyd who--despite a pitching change at the
mound--slammed a line-drive up the middle for a 3-RBI double. J. Scoville
followed with a similar grounder that brought Loyd in and earned Scoville
a double. When a hit batter and a walk would again load the bases\, N. Gi
lbertson returned to face the relief pitcher with similar results. He hit
his second triple for 2-RBIs and kept the rally going. A. Kovacs had his f
irst hit of the season (and his little league career) when he slapped a tr
iple out to center field that brought in one run. And even more hits follo

N. Loyd (earning his 6th RBI of the game)\, J. Scoville\, J. Melvin (for 1
RBI)\, and G. Daley (for 2 RBIs)...before Mt. Horeb'\;s fielders coul
d close out the inning.
\n
\nIn the bottom of the 5th\, Mt Horeb batters a
gain entered the batter'\;s box with a chance to close the gap. The fi
rst two batters reached base on balls only to later steal on some passed b
alls\, which put them into scoring position. One then scored on a fielding
error by second baseman J. Tollackson. Although one batter struck out and
an in-field pop fly\, caught by first baseman J. Scoville\, became the se
cond out\, a second run would when a batter walked with bases loaded. But
then\, with bases still loaded\, relief pitcher N. Loyd sealed Mt Horeb
39\;s fate by striking the final batter out (to claim his first little lea

DESCRIPTION:The Pecatonica Vikings had to dig themselves out of a hole when
they faced Mount Horeb #1 at home in Blanchardville. Although the Vikings
took a 2-0 lead in the 1st off singles by N. Loyd\, J. Scoville\, and N.

out on a throw from catcher N. Gilbertson to third baseman\, J. Scoville.
Down 5 to 7 in the bottom of the 4th\, the Pec batters continued their hi

\n
\nWhile Pec held their op
