5/24/10 Update: Congratulations to All Region selections. First team: Jake Davis, Gunnar Kines, and Travers Woodward. Honorable mention: Kyle Presley and Tim Starkey.


5/5/10 Update: Socastee loses the season finale by a score of 10-2 in an elimination game against St James. Kyle Presley started on the mound and did a good job but St James scrapped their way to some runs and took a good lead. Travers Woodward came in and pitched well but the Braves offense never materialized to make it a game. Hitting for the Braves were Gunnar Kines (1-3, HR, RBI), Tim Starkey (1-3), and Kenny Taylor (1-1).


5/3/10 Update: Socastee defeats visiting Bluffton in an elimination game behind the pitching of Travers Woodward and 4 RBI night from Charlie Nicholson. Travers pitched a 3 hit complete game and the defense played error free ball. Hitting for the Braves were Justin Vreeland (1-3, 2B), Jake Davis (1-4, RBI), Travers Woodward (1-3), Gunnar Kines (2-2, RBI), Tim Starkey (2-4, 2RBIs), and Charlie Nicholson (3-4, HR, 2B, 4RBIs). Braves visit St James on Wednesday for district championship.


5/2/10 Update: Socastee loses to local rival St James in 2nd round of playoffs by a score of 10-0. The little things made the difference in this game as the Braves threatened early but could not capitalize and the Sharks seized the momentum and never looked back. Gunnar Kines pitched for Socastee and hitting for the Braves were Justin Vreeland (1-2), Gunnar Kines (1-2), Kyle Presley (1-2), and Tim Starkey (1-2). They play Bluffton at home on Monday at 6pm in an elimination game.


4/29/10 Update: Socastee wins playoff opener at Bluffton by a score of 9-6 behind the combined pitching of Kyle Presley, Travers Woodward (gets the win), and Gunnar Kines and an explosive 4th inning where the Braves scored 8 runs on 8 hits.

The Braves fell behind 2-0 in the 2nd and were struggling at the plate until their 2nd time through the lineup. In the top of the 4th, Jake Davis led off with a double, Travers Woodward drove him in with a single, Gunnar Kines followed with a double and were driven in by Tim Starkey's 2RBI hit. Then an RBI single by Walker Darnell, single by Charlie Nicholson, RBI single by Matt McKinney, Justin Vreeland was hit by a pitch, sac fly by Jake Davis and then another RIBI single by Travers Woodward and they have an 8-2 lead.

In the bottom of the 4th the Bobcats scored a couple and Travers Woodward was brought in relief. He gave up 1 run and then shut them down until the 7th.

In the top of the 7th we got the first two runners on, Jake Davis was HBP and then another single by Travers Woodward. After a couple of outs Jake scored on a mishandled ball hit by Tim Starkey to the shortstop. This gave them a 9-5 lead going into the bottom of the 7th. The Bobcats loaded the bases and after Travers got a strikeout for 1 out, Gunnar Kines came in and struck out the next two batters to preserve the win.

Hitting for the Braves were Jake Davis (1-2, 2B, RBI, 2runs), Travers Woodward (3-4, 2RBIs, run), Gunnar Kines (2-3, 2B, run), Tim Starkey (1-4, 2B, 2RBIs, run), Walker Darnell (1-4, RBI, run), Charlie Nicholson (1-3, run), Matt McKinney (1-3, RBI, run)



4/25/10 Update: The Braves play Bluffton on Thursday at 6pm at Bluffton. Socastee is in good position as they have shown a balanced team that can show strength at any point in the lineup. Should be a good matchup as Bluffton went 8-2 in region and returns a strong team from last year. Good luck to the Braves.

4/23/10 Update: Socastee falls to St James in region finale by a score of 11-4. Of the 11 runs only 3 were earned as mistakes were costly to the Braves. They fall to 7-3 in the region and will travel to Bluffton on Thursday night for their first round playoff game. Kyle Presley was on the mound and pitched well for a complete game against #1 ranked St James. Hitting for the Braves were Jake Davis (3-4, RBI), Travers Woodward (2-4, RBI), Gunnar Kines (2-4, RBI), Kyle Presley (1-3, RBI), and Charlie Nicholson (1-3).


4/21/10 Update: Braves beat visiting North Myrtle Beach by a score of 12-10 on Senior night. It was the last regular season home game for seniors Tim Starkey, Jake Davis, Justin Vreeland, Kyle Presley, and Travers Woodward. Socastee fell behind early 1-0 when a run was walked in but then scored 4 of their own in the 2nd capped off by a Matt McKinney 3run homer. The next inning saw Socastee falter as they gave up 7 runs with only 2 being earned. They battled back scoring 2 each in the next 4 innings including a Charlie Nicholson 2 run homer and then held on to win by a score of 12-10. Pitching were Justin Vreeland and Travers Woodward and hitting for the Braves were Justin Vreeland (2-5, 3B, RBI), Travers Woodward (1-2), Kyle Presley (2-3, RBI), Tim Starkey (1-3), Walker Darnell (3-4, 2B), Charlie Nicholson (2-3, 2B, HR, 4RBIs), and Matt McKinney (2-4, HR, 3RBIs). They go to 7-2 in the region and meet St James on Thursday.


4/19/10 Update: Socastee beats visiting Myrtle Beach by a score of 5-2 behind the pitching of Gunnar Kines and Kyle Presley's 3run homer to move to 6-2 in the region. Gunnar added a few hits and Travers made a great play on a diving catch to save a run and stop a rally. Hitting for the Braves were Travers Woodward (1-3, 2B), Gunnar Kines (2-2, 2B), Kyle Presley (1-3, HR, 3RBIs), Tim Starkey (RBI), Walker Darnell (1-3), and Kenny Taylor (1-2, RBI).


4/15/10 Update: Braves jump to early lead on Travers Woodward homer but could not hold on as they fall to region opponent, Lake City by a score of 8-4.

1st inning saw Justin Vreeland reach base on an error, moved to 2nd by a Jake Davis sac bunt and then scored on Travers' 2 run shot to centerfield. They added 2 more in the 2nd as Tim Starkey led off with a single and reached 2nd on the mishandled ball. Moved to 3rd with a Walker Darnell sac bunt and scored on Justin's 2 out single. Justin caused more trouble as he stole 2nd and Kenny Taylor scored on the catchers throw. That was all the offense showed for Socastee on the night and Lake City scored 3 in the bottom of the 3rd and then 2 in the 4th to take the lead.

One of the better defensive plays was Jake Davis' throw to Tim at the plate to get a speedy runner trying to score from 2nd.

Pitching for the Braves were Kyle Presley and Travers Woodward. Hitting for Socastee were Justin Vreeland (1-3, RBI), Travers Woodward (1-3, HR, 2RBIs), Gunnar Kines (1-3), and Tim Starkey (2-3).Braves go to 5-2 in region play.


4/13/10 Update: Gunnar Kines pitches 1 hit shutout to pickup win against Myrtle Beach. Gunnar pitched great against a strong hitting MB team and Justin Vreeland delivered a two out RBI for the games only score as Socastee wins 1-0. They played a great overall game defensively and made the best of the hits they did get. Hitting for Socastee were Justin Vreeland (1-3, RBI), Gunnar Kines (1-3), Matt McKinney (2-3), and Kenny Taylor (1-3). Braves go to 5-1 in region play.


4/9/10 Update: Socastee loses to non-region opponent, Carolina Forest by a score of 3-2. The Braves played very well but couldn't put enough offense on the board to capture the win. Justin and Jake delivered the only hits and the Braves had RBIs on suicide squeeze plays by Tim Starkey and Travers Woodward. Pitching were Kyle Presley, Gunnar Kines, and Travers Woodward. Hitting for the Braves were Justin Vreeland (2-3, 2-2Bs), Jake Davis (2-2), Tim Starkey (RBI), and Travers Woodward (RBI).


4/2/10 Update: The Braves defeat Upper Saint Clair from Pittsburgh to win the "C" bracket of the Mingo Bay Classic by a score of 8-4. Socastee's bracket from early in the week proved the strongest as the teams (Fairmont, Greenville, Cherry Hill) all won on Thursday and 3 of the 4 won on Friday to win their brackets. Kyle Presley pitched well and Gunnar Kines closed to lead Socastee from the mound. Hitting for the Braves were Justin Vreeland (3-4, 3RBIs), Jake Davis (1-4, RBI), Tim Starkey (1-4, RBI). Travers Woodward (2-4), Walker Darnell (1-2), Charlie Nicholson (1-2, 2B, RBI), Gunnar Kines (1-2, 2B, RBI), and Kenny Taylor (1-3).


4/2/10 Update: Socastee plays St Clair from Pittsburgh PA today at 10am for the championship of the C bracket.


4/1/10 Update: Braves win opening game in C bracket by 10 run rule, 12-2. Leading Socastee were Travers Woodward on the mound and at the plate with a 3 run HR. Travers pitched a complete game and hitting for Socastee were Jake Davis (1-4, RBI), Travers Woodward (2-2, HR, 2RBIs), Walker Darnell (3-4, 3B, 4RBIs), Kenny Taylor (2-4), and Matt McKinney (1-2, 2RBIs).


4/1/10 Update: Socastee loses to eventual bracket winner, Cherry Hill by a score of 18-10. The Braves brought it to within 1 on HRs by Kenny Taylor, Justin Vreeland and Kyle Presley in the 5th but CH scores 8 in the sixth to take it out of reach. Pitching for SB were Matt McKinney, Kenny Taylor, Tim Starkey, and Justin Vreeland. Hitting for Socastee were Justin Vreeland (2-4, HR, RBI), Tim Starkey (1-2, 2B), Travers Woodward (1-4, RBI). Kyle Presley (1-3, HR, 3RBIs), Walker Darnell (2-4, 2B, RBI), Manny Berdayes (1-3, 2B, RBI), and Kenny Taylor (1-4, HR, 2RBIs).


3/31/10 Update: Braves lose to visiting Greenville 4-2 in 2nd game of Mingo Bay. They gave up some early runs to a strong hitting Greenville club but then held them. Socastee rallied to score 2 but could get no more as they fall to a SC 3-A team. Starting pitcher for the Braves was Gunnar Kines who went 4 and Chase Keevert did a great job in relief holding the Greenville team to 1 hit and no runs over 3 innings. Hitting for the Braves were Justin Vreeland (1-3, 2B), Jake Davis (1-3), Tim Starkey (1-3, 2B, 2RBIs), Travers Woodward (1-3), and Kenny Taylor (1-3).


3/30/10 Update: Braves unload for 12 hits including a game ending 3 run hit by Travers Woodward to defeat visiting Fairmont WV 13-3 in the Mingo Bay opener. The game resumed from Monday night, Kyle Presley pitched 1 inning of shutout ball on Monday and Justin Vreeland pitched 4 innings on Tuesday for the win. Hitting for the Braves Justin Vreeland (1-3), Jake Davis (1-3, 2B), Travers Woodward (2-2, HR, 3RBIs), Kyle Presley (2-3, 2B, 2RBIs), Walker Darnell (3-3, 2B, 2RBIs), Gunnar Kines (1-3, 2B, 2RBIs), Matt McKinney (1-3, 2B, RBI), and Kenny Taylor (1-2, RBI).


3/30/10 Update: Last night's game against Fairmont WV was rained out. It has been rescheduled for 2pm today if the fields can be prepared. Please call as the schedule is not firm and may shift.


3/26/10 Update: Braves go to 4-1 in the region behind the pitching of Travers Woodward and home runs by Gunnar Kines and Tim Starkey. Travers held the visiting Georgetown Bulldogs to 4 hits to pick up the win and Justin Vreeland came in to close them down in the 7th. Hitting for the Braves were Justin Vreeland (2-4, 2B, RBI), Jake Davis (RBI), Tim Starkey (3-4, HR, 2RBIs), Travers Woodward (1-3, 2RBIs), Kyle Presley (2-4, RBI), Walker Darnell (1-4, 2B, RBI), Gunnar Kines (1-3, HR, RBI), and Kenny Taylor (1-2, 2B).


3/25/10 Update: Matt McKinney earns the win as Socastee defeats visiting Green County from Arkansas at Ripken Field. Matt went 6 innings before Chase Keevert came in relief. Hitting for the Braves were Justin Vreeland (3-6, 2RBIs), Jake Davis (2-3,2B, 2RBIs), Tim Starkey (RBI), Travers Woodward (2RBIs), Kyle Presley (3-5, 2-2B, 2RBIs), Walker Darnell (1-4, RBI), Charlie Nicholson (2-5), Gunnar Kines (2-4, 2B, RBI), and Kenny Taylor (3-3, 3B, 2RBIs)


3/24/10 Update: Gunnar Kines threw 5 innings of shutout ball, striking out 9 as the Braves rolled past region opponent NMB by a score of 10-0. This raises their region record to 3-1. Hitting for Socastee were Justin Vreeland (2-3), Jake Davis (2-4, 2RBIs), Travers Woodward (2-4, 3RBIs), Kyle Presley (1-2), Walker Darnell (1-2, 2B, RBI), and Charlie Nicholson (1-1).


3/21/10 Update: Braves lose doubleheader to Camden but show well. They lose 18-13 in game 1 but Kyle pitched well and their bats showed up. Justin threw a complete game and with just one more hit they would have won but fell 4-3. Pitching for Socastee today were Kyle Presley, Chase Keevert, Tyler Bigham, Travers Woodward in game 1 and Justin Vreeland threw a complete game in 2nd. Hitting for the Braves in the 1st game were Justin Vreeland (2-5), Matt McKinney (1-4), Tim Starkey (2-5), Kyle Presley (1-3), Jake Davis (1-3), Walker Darnell (2-3), Manny Berdayes (1-2), and Kenny Taylor (1-3).
In 2nd game it was Jake Davis (1-2), Tim Starkey (3-3, 2-2Bs, 2 RBIs), Kyle Presley (1-3, RBI), and Kenny Taylor (1-2)


3/20/10 Update: Socastee loses to visiting Gilman from MD by 16-10. Cal Ripken's son, Ryan Ripken played for Gilman and went 3-4. Pitching for the Braves were Charlie Nicholson, Kyle Smith, and Chase Keevert. Hitting for Socastee were Justin Vreeland (3-5), Kyle Presley (1-5), Kyle Smith (1-2, RBI), Manny Berdayes (1-4, RBI), Jake Davis (2-3, 2B, 2 RBIs), Kenny Taylor (2-3, 2RBIs), Cobi Guilbeau (RBI) and Dalton Smith (1-3, 2B, RBI).


3/19/10 Update: Braves were no-hit by region foe, St James and fall to 2-1 in the region. Pitching for the Braves were Justin Vreeland and Travers Woodward.


3/18/10 Update: Socastee falls to non-region opponent Carolina Forest by a score of 6-2. They fell behind early and could not muster enough hits to come back. Pitching for the Braves were Matt McKinney and Kenny Taylor. Hitting were Justin Vreeland (1-2, RBI), Travers Woodward (1-3), and Jake Davis (1-3, 3B).


3/16/10 Update: Gunnar Kines struck out 12 and gave up 5 hits and the Braves down visiting Lake City 6-1. Gunnar was in command all night as the Braves scored 1 in the first and 1 in the second and then added 3 late to secure the win. Hitting for Socastee were Tim Starkey (1-3, RBI), Justin Vreeland (1-4), Travers Woodward (1-4), Charlie Nicholson (1-2), Jake Davis (2-3), Matt McKinney (1-3, 2B), and Walker Darnell (3-3, 2B, 3RBIs). Walker, Jake, and Matt were big contributors at the plate with their hitting as the Braves move to 2-0 in the region.


3/13/10 Update: Camden at home rained out. Has not been rescheduled.


3/12/10 Update: Socastee-Myrtle Beach game rained out again. Rescheduled for April 19th.


3/11/10 Update: Socastee-Myrtle beach game rained out. Rescheduled for Friday evening at 6pm (weather permitting).


3/10/10 Update: Gunnar Kines struck out 14 batters and walked one while scattering five hits over seven innings, and drove in the winning run on a sacrifice fly Tuesday to lead the Socastee baseball team to a 2-0 win over Georgetown. Hitting for the Braves were Matt McKinney (1-2, 2B), Tim Starkey (1-2), Gunnar Kines (RBI), Manny Berdayes (1-3), Jake Davis (2-3, 2B), and Kenny Taylor (1-3).


3/09/10 Update: Socastee wins region opener behind pitching of Gunnar Kines by a score of 2-0. Gunnar had 14 strikeouts, 1 walk, and gave up only 4 hits. The Braves scored 1 in the first and that was all they needed but added an insurance run in the 3rd. More details to follow.


3/07/10 Update: Braves lose 11-3 to a strong hitting St James team. Socastee could not hit like they did in the 3 previous outings and were unable to mount a threat after St James had a big inning in the 4th. Pitching for the Braves were Matt McKinney and Kenny Taylor. Socastee scattered 6 hits including hits by Travers Woodward (2-4, RBI), Tim Starkey (1-2), Gunnar Kines (2-2), and Walker Darnell (1-2, 2 RBIs)


3/06/10 Update: The Braves fall behind early 6-0 but rally to beat North Myrtle Beach in tournament play. Travers Woodward gets the win with pitching efforts by Walker Darnell, Kenny Taylor, Justin Vreeland, and Travers. Socastee had 9 hits including 3 RBIs each from Manny Berdayes and Gunnar Kines. Hitting for the Braves were Jake Davis (1-5, RBI), Travers Woodward (1-3), Kyle Presley (1-3, 2B, RBI), Justin Vreeland (3-5), Manny Berdayes (1-4, 2B, 3RBIs), Gunnar Kines (1-3, 2B, 3RBIs), and Kenny Taylor (1-3).

3/06/10 Update: Socastee plays St James in Championship Game at North Myrtle Beach. Game time is 2pm.

3/05/10 Update: Socastee plays North Myrtle Beach tonight at 6pm at North Myrtle.

3/05/10 Update: The Braves open the season with a split in Thursday nights doubleheader. In the first game the Braves started out strong by beating Laney 14-5 behind solid performances on the mound by Justin Vreeland and Matt McKinney and 13 hits including hits by Jake Davis (1-5, 3RBIs), Tim Starkey (2-5, 2B), Charlie Nicholson (2-4, HR, 2B, RBI), Travers Woodward (1-3), Kyle Presley (1-4, 2B, 2RBIs), Manny Berdayes (2-3, 2B, 2RBIs), Justin Vreeland (2-4, RBI), and Kenny Taylor (2-3, 2RBIs).

In the nightcap they were up early against #5 ranked West Brunswick as Socastee looked strong through 4-1/2 innings but couldn't hold on as they fall 9-6. Gunnar Kines looked strong on the mound for 4 innings and we outhit WB by 12-7 with hits from Jake Davis (1-3), Tim Starkey (1-4, 2B, RBI), Charlie Nicholson (2-4, 2B, RBI), Travers Woodward (1-4), Kyle Presley (2-4, RBI), Manny Berdayes (2-4, RBI), Justin Vreeland (2-4, RBI), and Gunnar Kines (1-3, RBI).


3/02/10 Update: Wednesday's game at West Brunswick has been rescheduled for Thursday night as a double header with West Brunswick and Laney. First game at 5pm.

Tonight's scrimmage will be played at Ripken field at 5:30 against Andrews.  the Dillon scrimmage has been cancelled at this point.
