SHS 53 VS Kempner 44
The non-district season opener for the Varsity Womenís Basketball team was a great display of what we have to look forward to this season. Emotions were running high in the stands for the parents of Seniorís who realized this was the ďlast first game of the seasonĒ. Stratford came out of the gate strong, leading 15 to 4 at the end of the first quarter. The depth of the team was on display as 9 of the 14 players got play time. Senior, Rachel Rapier scored the first basket of the season with an assist from Senior, Jaime Hewitt. Hewitt also scored the first quarter with an assist by Junior, Emily Tekell. Senior, Ashley Sherrard displayed her shooting ability with a basket right at the buzzer to end the first quarter.
The second quarter continued to show the tenacity of our players. Senior, Lacie Stevens scored with an assist from Rapier. Senior, Hope Wiggins dashed Kempnerís attempt to score with a clean steal. Junior, Sarah Davis resoundingly blocked an opponentís shot at the end of the quarter. The teamís practice and hard work during the off season showed as they closed the half with a score of SHS 25 to KHS 16.
The third quarter was highlighted by Senior, Shelby Thomasí outstanding defense against the press. Sophomore, Kathryn Arcy was able to get a fast break for a well-executed layup. Senior, Emily Rucker scored at the end of the quarter giving us the score SHS 38 vs KHS 24. The fourth quarter was more of the same.
