The 2010 season came to a bittersweet end Monday night, as Sanders Construction defeated Hucke 13-12 in a walk-off victory and lost to State Farm 15-9 in the Tournament Championship game.

The Leprechauns were down early in the night’s second semifinal game, as Hucke scored 6 times in the top of the first inning.  SC scored three times in the bottom of the first though, and nearly batted around in the second as they scored 5 runs and took an 8-6 lead after 2 innings.  By the end of the fifth inning the Leps led 11-8, but Hucke rallied to score 4 runs in the top of the sixth to take a 12-11 lead.  SC was unable to score in the bottom of the sixth and held Hucke scoreless in the top of the seventh.

Down to their final 3 outs and trailing by a single run in the bottom of the seventh, SC provided a thrilling finish to a back-and-forth game.  Parker Magill led off the inning with a base hit and Ryan Waldorf followed with a single.  Brett Marshall flew out next, with the runners unable to advance safely.  Nate Proud then set the runners in motion with a deep fly ball over the right fielder’s head – his second triple of the night.  Magill scored easily from second base, but the relay throw looked to beat Waldorf home.  Waldorf was able to get under the tag however, with a head-first slide to score the game-winning run and start the celebration.

Tyler Zimmer finished the game 3-for-4 with a double, run scored, and 3 RBI, and Magill was also 3-for-4 with 2 RBI.  Tom Sanders hit a triple, scored 2 runs, and had 3 RBI, Ryan Prod had 2 hits and 2 RBI, and Brett Conners had a RBI-double and scored a run.

In the Championship Game the Leps played from behind most of the night.  They trailed 9-1 after 3 innings, but scored 5 times in the top of the fifth to make the score 11-7.  SF scored twice in the bottom of the fifth though and twice again in the sixth to make the score 15-9.  SC was unable to put together one more rally though in the seventh and the 2010 season came to a close.

Ryan Prod was 4-for-4 with 2 runs, Brett Proud was 3-for-3 with a homer, 2 runs, and 2 RBI, and Devin Von Rueden and Brett Marshall both hit inside-the-park home runs.  Ryan Waldorf had 2 hits and Tom Massnick was 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI.

Following the game SC was presented with their 1st Place trophy for winning the B League, and 2nd Place trophy for the Tournament.  This was the third consecutive year the Leprechauns made the Tournament Championship game, and the team has now collected 5 trophies the past 3 seasons.

-Nate Proud was named Player of the Game for the first game, going 3-for-3 with 2 3B, BB, 2 R, and 2 RBI, plus the game-winning hit.

-Brett Proud was named Player of the Game for the second game, going 3-for-3 with a HR, 2 R, and 2 RBI.

-Parker Magill, Ryan Prod, Brett Proud, and Nate Proud were named to the 2010 All-Tournament Team following the final game.

The 2010 regular season has come to a finish, and several Leprechauns ended the season rewriting the record books.  Here’s a rundown of the team and individual accomplishments from 2010:

-As a team Sanders Construction set new records in several offensive categories, including hits (296), doubles (59), triples (21), total bases (431), and runs scored and RBI (196).

-Outfielder Brett Proud broke several single season records.  Proud finished the year with an 18-game hit streak, which broke the previous record of 16 games, held by Tom Sanders.  Proud set new records in home runs (6), RBI (23), total bases (58), slugging percentage (1.234), and runs and RBI combined (46).  He also tied the single season record for runs scored (23), which he now shares with Mike Sanders (23 runs scored in 2008).

-11 players scored at least 10 runs and had at least 10 RBI – Brett Conners, Martin Dezell, Parker Magill, Brett Marshall, Tom Massnick, Ryan Prod, Brett Proud, Nate Proud, Tom Sanders, Devin Von Rueden, and Ryan Waldorf.

-8 players finished with at least 30 total bases – Magill, Massnick, Prod, B. Proud, N. Proud, Von Rueden, and Waldorf.

-Martin Dezell bounced back from a rough 2009 season to put up strong numbers in 2010.  His 18 runs scored and 14 RBI were career highs, and he hit .581 in 10 games after hitting .280 in 10 games last year.

-Devin Von Rueden also posted career numbers with 19 runs and 11 RBI in 2010.

-Parker Magill tied a career record with his 29 hits in 2010.  Magill also posted more total bases (36) than in any previous year, and his 19 RBI were a career best.

-Ryan Prod hit .704 in 8 games and 7 of his 19 hits were for doubles, a new career high.  His 23 runs and RBI combined were also a career best.

-Ryan Waldorf had 44 total bases in 2010, a career high and second best all time for SC.  His 19 RBI and 15 runs were career highs, and his 27 hits were 11 better from a year ago.

-Tom Massnick put up career numbers in most categories this season, including hits (26), doubles (5), total bases (33), runs (13), and RBI (14).  His .605 batting average gave him the team’s batting title.

-Tom Sanders rebounded from a rough 2009 regular season, collecting more hits, doubles, and triples in 2010 than the previous year.  He scored at least 10 runs for the 4th consecutive season and his 17 RBI were a career best.

Leprechauns are League Champions!

In their eighth and possible final season as a franchise, the Leprechauns are finally league champions.  The past three seasons have seen two championship game appearances, one tournament championship, and now a regular season league title.  Sanders Construction finished the season 12-2, tied with State Farm for the best record.  But SC held the tiebreaker due to an advantage in runs scored in the two teams’ head to head meetings this year.

One week after scoring a season-low 3 runs, the Leps scored a season-high 22 times, in a tense and defensively sloppy 22-20 victory over Quest Technologies.  The win means that SC will head into the Monday Night Tournament next week as the #1 seed, and will play either Freedom Investors or Hucke at 9 pm in the second semi-final game.

Devin Von Rueden led SC with 4 hits, 3 of them doubles, and 6 RBI and 2 runs scored.  Ryan Waldorf also had a 4-hit performance, with a triple and 2 RBI.  Brett Conners scored 3 runs and drove in 3, Tyler Zimmer hit 3 doubles, and Brett Marshall and Ryan Prod both scored 3 times during the 5-inning game.

The Leps led 20-13 going into the bottom of the fourth, but Quest scored 7 times to tie the game up heading into the final inning.  Brett Conners led off the top of the fifth with a base hit and moved to third on Tom Sanders' second double of the night.  Von Rueden then drove in both runners with a base hit to center field, giving SC a 22-20 advantage.

Sanders Construction scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning, but the offense sputtered the rest of the night, as they Leprechauns lost for just the second time this season.  The 7-3 loss to Foolery’s drops SC’s record to 11-2 and in a tie for first place with State Farm with just 1 game left in the regular season.  SC will play Quest Technologies next Monday night at 9 pm.

Brett Conners was the only Lep hitter to have a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.  Devin Von Rueden finished 1-for-3 with a double, walk, and run scored, and Brett Proud was 1-for-3 with a triple, run, and RBI.

The Leprechauns left 9 runners in scoring position and the loss snaps their 8-game winning streak.  The players were upset about their performance after the game, but were also quick to blame the loss on the absence of the team’s hot dog eating mascot, Joey Wisneski.

The loss puts a blemish on an otherwise stellar 2010 campaign for SC, though Leprechaun teams have bounced back from adverse conditions before.  Toward the end of the 2008 season the Leprechauns suffered a 7-2 loss to Freedom Investors followed by a 14-8 loss to Breakshots.  SC then won the final 3 games of the regular season and made it to the tournament championship game.  Last year, the Leps lost 4 of their last 6 games, and in all 4 losses the team managed just 3 runs.  That team of course went on to win 3 straight in the tournament to win the championship.

Sanders Construction recorded their 8th straight win Monday night, beating Landsharks 12-6.  The Leprechauns scored at least 1 run in every inning except for the 2nd inning, and their tough defense never allowed Landsharks’ offense to gain any momentum.  SC remains in first place with an 11-1 record with 2 games left in the regular season.  Next up for the Leps is a 6 pm game against Foolery’s on August 2.

Devin Von Rueden led off the game with a triple to right field and scored on Tom Sanders’ sac fly.  Von Rueden finished the night 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored.  Nate Proud then followed with an inside-the-park homer, his second of the year.  Tyler Zimmer hit a triple and scored on James Bakken’s RBI-groundout, 1 of 3 RBIs for Bakken on the night.

Brett Marshall was 2-for-4 with a triple and 3 RBI, and Brett Proud finished 2-for-2 with a triple and 2 RBI.  B. Proud has now set a season record for total bases (53) and RBI (21), and is closing in on the season records for runs scored and hits.

As a team, the 2010 Leps have also broken or will break several offensive records.  This year’s team has now scored 171 runs, which is 6 more than the 2008 team’s total.  The 2010 Leps are 7 total bases away from breaking the 2008 record of 378, and are just 3 hits away from breaking the 2008 record of 257.

FIRST PLACE!

Leprechauns Defeat State Farm 10-6; Take Sole Possession of 1st Place!

Sanders Construction had an 8-0 lead after 3 innings, played tough defense all night, and the end result was an impressive 10-6 win over State Farm Monday night.  The victory improves the Leprechauns’ record to 10-1 as they now stand alone in first place for the first time in 2010.  And with only 3 games remaining it also gives SC their best chance ever to win a regular season league title.

With one out in the bottom of the 1st inning, Nate Proud hit a triple.  Brett Proud then drove him in with his 6th home run of the season and the Leps took a 2-0 lead.  SC pushed another run across later in the inning when Tyler Zimmer scored on Ryan Waldorf’s 2-out double.

SC scored 4 times in the 3rd inning as the first 7 batters all got on base.  N. Proud finished the night 3-for-3 with 3 runs scored and a RBI and B. Proud went 2-for-2 and collected 3 RBI.  Ryan Prod, Parker Magill, and Waldorf all finished with 2 hits apiece, and Zimmer scored 2 runs.

SC plays Monday night at 7 pm and will take on Landsharks (1-10).

Sanders Construction scored 5 times in the first inning on their way to recording their ninth win and setting a new franchise record for most wins in a season.  The Leprechauns’ 11-3 victory over Freedom Investors Monday night sets up a pivotal showdown next week, as SC will take on State Farm (9-1) with the league title up for grabs.

Brett Proud made his case for team MVP, going 3-for-3 with 2 solo home runs and 3 runs scored.  Proud, who has started all 10 games this year, has 11 extra base hits and 44 total bases – 11 more than the next closest total.  With 4 games remaining Proud has a good chance of eclipsing the single season record for total bases – in 2008 Mike Sanders had 51 during his MVP campaign.

The first 5 batters reached base and scored for the Leprechauns in the bottom of the first, as Ryan Prod and Nate Proud started things off with back-to-back doubles.  B. Proud and Parker Magill followed with back-to-back singles, and Tyler Zimmer then hit a RBI double.  Ryan Waldorf reached base 3 times with a single, double, and walk, and every Leprechaun hitter finished with either a runs scored or a run batted in.

SC hosts State Farm this Monday at 7 pm.

Sanders Construction scored just 5 runs on 11 hits, but they combined excellent defense and solid pitching to gut out a 5-1 victory over Hucke Monday night.  The past three seasons the Leprechauns have finished at 8-6 – but with 5 games remaining and a current record of 8-1, they are almost guaranteed of setting a franchise record in 2010.

Monday night’s game remained scoreless until the top of the 4th inning, when Parker Magill collected a 1-out single, and Martin Dezell advanced him to second base with a 2-out walk.  James Bakken then lined a triple to right-center to drive in Magill and Dezell and give the Leps a 2-0 lead.

Brett Proud led off the top of the 6th inning with an inside-the-park homer.  Magill then doubled and Brett Marshall drove him in with a base hit.  Dezell walked again, and Tom Massnick drove in Marshall with a single.  The Leps didn’t allow a run until the 7th inning when Hucke attempted to rally – but SC’s defense stepped up all night long with especially strong plays from the outfield.

The 5 runs scored marks the lowest run total ever for a Leprechaun victory.  The previous low was SC’s 6-2 win against State Farm in the 2009 Tournament Championship Game.  The 1 run allowed was the second-lowest runs allowed in a Lep victory.  In 2008 SC had a 24-0 win against Landsharks, and in 2009 they shutout Landsharks again, 17-0.

The Leps return to action Monday night at 9 pm against Freedom Investors.

Sanders Construction jumped out to another early lead Monday night, scoring 7 runs in the top of the first inning, and the Leprechauns cruised to yet another double-digit victory, 17-6 over Kiltie.  The biggest news of the night however occurred hours later, as State Farm was defeated by Freedom Investors, 19-17.  The Leps are now tied for first place at 7-1, with 6 games to play, and a key meeting with State Farm scheduled for July 19.

Tom Sanders started the game with an opposite-field, leadoff triple to right field, and Brett Conners drove him in with a base hit.  Leprechaun pitcher Devin Von Rueden praised Sanders for his abilities as a leadoff batter, calling his ability to get on base “awesome.”  Von Rueden went on to state that Sanders’ triple “set the tone for the rest of the game, and was a calming influence on myself.  That hit really calmed my nerves and inspired me to pitch my best.”

Martin Dezell was 4-for-4 with a double and 2 runs scored, and Ryan Prod continued to swing a hot bat, going 4-for-4 with a triple, double, and 3 runs scored.  Conners finished the game with 3 hits and 2 runs scored, Aaron Miller was 3-for-4 with a run and RBI, and Ryan Waldorf collected 3 hits.  As a team, SC banged out 31 hits, including 3 triples and 5 doubles.

The Leps return to action Monday night at 7 pm against Hucke (5-3).

Leprechaun general manager/manager Tom Sanders had two major announcements following Sanders Construction's 20-5 victory Monday night.  First, it was revealed that John Pulera, injured since the first game of the season, will spend the rest of the year on the disabled list.  To fill his spot on the roster, the Leprechauns will activate Bob Sanders from the 60-day DL in time for the July 5 game.

It was also announced officially that T. Sanders has made the following promise: If the Leprechauns win the regular season outright, and are the #1 seed in this year's tournament, he will buy the first round of pitchers following the Leprechauns' final tournament game.

The race for the Monday Night B Division title is quickly coming down to two teams.  Sanders Construction scored 18 runs in the first two innings Monday night and cruised to another run-rule victory, 20-5 over Quest Technologies in 6 innings.  The win improves the Leprechauns’ record to 6-1, as they remain a game behind State Farm (7-0).  Hucke and Foolery’s are tied for 3rd place at 4-3.

Tyler Zimmer was 3-for-3 with 2 doubles and 3 runs scored, Ryan Prod had a triple, double, and single as he drove in 3 runs, and Tom Sanders was 3-for-3 with 4 RBI.  Tom Massnick was 2-for-3 with a double and his first career triple, and brothers Brett and Nate Proud combined for 4 hits, 4 runs, and 4 RBI.  Devin Von Rueden, Brett Marshall, James Bakken, and Martin Dezell all had multi-hit games.

Quest scored 2 runs in the top of the first inning to take an early and short-lived lead, as the Leps scored 10 in the bottom of the first and 8 in the bottom of the second.  In 6 wins, SC has outscored their opponents 109 to 37 and hold a 12-run average margin of victory.

SC plays again Monday night at 6 pm against Kiltie (1-5).

In between taunting the umpire, taunting his teammates, taunting the other team, and taunting anything that moved, Leprechaun pitcher Devin Von Rueden managed to throw a few strikes without getting kicked out or his ass kicked.  Von Rueden struck out 5 batters Monday night: 1 for every pitcher of Miller Lite he enjoyed before the first pitch of Sanders Construction’s (5-1) 16-6 victory over Foolery’s (3-3).

Von Rueden’s post-game comments included an attempt to draw several teammates into a fight, including third baseman Tyler Zimmer.  Zimmer politely declined the offer however, citing a fear that manager Tom Sanders would have to pitch the rest of the season with Von Rueden in the hospital.  With the joy of another Leprechaun victory still washing over him, Von Rueden forgot where he parked his car and attempted to break into the manager's car, believing it to be his own.  Early reports indicate that Von Rueden was eventually able to find his car and made it home safely.

As for the action on the field, Sanders Construction led 7-3 after 4 innings.  In the top of the 5th the Leps exploded for 8 runs as the lineup batted around.  SC used timely hitting to score their 16 runs, but also displayed patience at the plate collecting 7 team walks.

T. Sanders was 2-for-3 with 5 RBI, Parker Magill was 3-for-5 with 3 RBI, and Brett Marshall finished the night with 3 RBI to lead SC.  Brett Conners went 3-for-4 with 3 runs scored and Ryan Waldorf had 2 RBI.

SC returns to action Monday night at 6 pm, hosting Quest Technologies.

Parker Magill hit his first homer of the season in the bottom of the first inning to give the Leprechauns an early lead.  The home run tied Brett Proud for the team lead in home runs.  Proud responded with a solo shot in the fifth inning to take back the team lead.  Then Magill responded with a thunderous foul out/strikeout in the sixth inning.  The contest between Mr. Magill and Mr. Proud was the most competitive part of Monday night’s 17-8 Leprechaun (4-1) victory over the woeful Landsharks (0-5).

Martin Dezell had 2 doubles and 3 RBI, Nate Proud was 3-for-3 with 2 runs scored, and Tom Massnick finally revealed himself to be human at the plate, ending the night 1-for-4.  In the field Brett Conners earned an hour’s worth of community service, allowing several Landsharks “hitters” to feel good about themselves.  Martin Dezell earned the “Jeff Suppan Inning of Shame” Award, pitching a 3-run seventh inning.

Every Leprechaun hitter recorded at least 1 hit, and 10 of the 13 batters collected at least 1 run and 1 RBI.  The Leprechauns return to action Monday, June 14 at 9 pm against Foolery’s (3-2).

Sanders Construction scored 3 runs in the top of the 7th inning, but the small rally was not enough as they lost for the first time, 9-7 to State Farm.  SF took a 9-4 lead in the bottom of the 6th inning, courtesy of a 3-run homer to left center - the final of four home runs hit by SF Monday night.

Tom Massnick went 3-for-3, scored a run, and drove in 2 to lead the Leprechaun offense.  Nate Proud, Martin Dezell, and Brett Conners were the only other Leprechauns to have multi-hit games.  The other offensive highlight of the night was Brett Proud's 2-run homer in the first inning.

No game next week (Memorial Day) - SC returns to action on June 7 at 8 pm against Landsharks.

For the second week in a row a veteran Leprechaun led an offensive outburst, as Ryan Waldorf collected 7 RBI in grand style.  Waldorf had a double, a solo home run, and a grand slam to lead Sanders Construction to an impressive 18-6 victory over Hucke (1-1) Monday night.  SC improves to 2-0 to start the 2010 season.

The Leps collected 25 hits, 9 of which came from Leprechauns making their team debut.  Aaron Miller went 4-for-4, Tyler Zimmer had 3 hits including a triple, and James Bakken went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI.  For the second straight week every SC batter scored a run or drove in one.  Shortstop Martin Dezell had another 3-hit game and scored 3 times, and Tom Massnick was 3-for-4 with 2 runs and 2 RBI.

Devin Von Rueden made his season debut on the mound, allowing just 6 runs in 6 innings.

In 2009 veteran Leprechaun outfielder Tom “Moose” Massnick drove in 6 runs in the 10 games he played in.  After 1 game in 2010, he has already equaled that number.  Massnick went 4-for-4, scored twice, and recorded 6 RBI to lead Sanders Construction to an impressive 21-6 home win against Kiltie.

SC, the defending 2009 tournament champions, pounded out 27 hits, including 5 doubles and 2 triples.  The 2010 Leprechaun roster features 6 new players, and 2 players who only played in a combined 8 games last year.  Making their Leprechaun debuts last night were Brett Marshall, who went 2-for-2 with 2 RBI, and Brett Conners who scored 2 runs.

Returning veterans Ryan Waldorf and Martin Dezell both recorded 3-hit and 3-RBI games, and Parker Magill went 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored.  John Pulera scored 3 times and drove in 2 runs, and Devin Von Rueden reached base 4 times and crossed home plate 4 times.  Brett Proud was the only other Lep batter to collect 4 hits, and he had 3 RBI.

Tom Sanders allowed 6 runs in 5 innings of work, and Von Rueden pitched a scoreless 6th.  Sanders and Von Rueden will be sharing pitching duties throughout the year, as they replace long-time SC hurler Jon Prod, who retired at the end of last season.  Also gone from the 2009 champion squad are Mike Sanders, Bob Sanders, Andy Globig, Adam Jacob, Jon Strohbusch, Jeremy Newman, and Joey Wisneski.  Wisneski has taken a scouting job with the team and will serve as a part-time mascot.

SC plays next week at 8 pm against Hucke (1-0).

After losing 3 of their last 4 regular season games, it would have been easy for the Sanders Construction Leprechauns to feel frustrated by a lackluster end to what had once been a promising season.  It would not have been surprising to see SC bow out early in the Monday Night Tournament, a year after making a Cinderella run to the Championship Game.  But the 2009 Leps possessed too much talent and fortitude to go out without a fight, and at the end of Monday night's tournament, after 3 remarkable games, the upstart Leprechauns had firmly taken their place as Champions.

The night began with a familiar foe - Harley Davidson - who SC defeated a year earlier in the Quarterfinals by 1 run.  The Leprechauns got on the board early, with back-to-back-to-back doubles from Mike Sanders, Andy Globig, and Parker Magill in the bottom of the first.  Ryan Prod then collected 1 of his 2 RBIs on the night with a triple, and Ryan Waldorf followed with an RBI single to give SC a 4-0 lead.  Harley Davidson scored twice in the third inning, but failed to put up any runs in any of the other innings.

Meanwhile, the Leps added a run in the fourth when Jon Strohbusch walked with the bases loaded to force in a run.  SC scored three more in the fifth, off of an RBI single from R. Prod and a 2-RBI double by Tom Sanders to make the scored 8-2, which would hold up for a quarterfinal win and a date with Breakshots in the semifinals.

Breakshots, which was the #2 seed in the tournament and had a first-round bye, had defeated SC twice in the regular season, though SC had defeated the group of ragged townies last year in the tournament, 21-4.

SC scored a run in the top of the first and 3 runs in the third, and then exploded for 6 runs in the fourth inning and 7 runs in the sixth.  M. Sanders led the offensive attack, going 4-for-5 with an inside-the-park home run and scoring 4 times.  Waldorf added 3 hits and drove in 3 runs, and Martin Dezell had a triple and a double with 2 runs scored and 2 runs driven in.  Devin Von Rueden, Andy Globig, R. Prod, and T. Sanders all had 2-RBI games.

In the Championship Game the Leps faced another team that had swept them in the regular season, State Farm, who had earlier defeated Hucke and Hogg Alley.  The Leprechauns had to turn to their trademark style of tough and gritty defense, and allowed just 2 runs - 1 in the bottom of the second and 1 in the third inning.

Parker Magill led the Lep offense, going 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBIs.  Jon Prod added a triple and 2 RBIs to help his own cause, and Adam Jacob and Strohbusch both collected triples as well.  Tom Massnick and Mike Sanders scored runs for the Leps, while Martin Dezell and Joey Wisneski collected RBIs.

SC outfielder Mike Sanders was named MVP of the Tournament, as he went 9-for-11 in the 3 combined games and scored 8 runs (25% of the Leps' total runs).

CHAMPIONS!

Leprechauns Win Monday Night Tournament!

SC 8, Harley Davidson 2
SC 18, Breakshots 14
SC 6, State Farm 2

Tuesday, August 18, 2009

After 7 years, 3 sponsors, 3 playoff appearances, and countless roster changes, the Sanders Construction Leprechauns were finally declared Monday Night Tournament Champions.  Beginning the night as the #3 seed, SC defeated Harley Davidson 8-2 as the home team, and then pounded out an 18-14 victory on the road against Breakshots in the night's first semifinal.  The Leprechauns were again the road team as they faced State Farm, a team that had defeated SC twice earlier in the season.  But the Leps relied upon their trademark tough and gritty defense, and put on a dazzling display of glove work, holding State Farm to just 2 runs in the championship game, and winning the First Place trophy, 6-2.

Check back later for complete coverage of all three games, including photos and stats.
