Scottish Grab Final Playoff Spot

In a must-win match between Scottish and Victoria to determine who would be the North III representative in the Challenge Cup Provincials, Scottish manage to prevail and move on to next weekend's action.  Coming into the match, both clubs were tied with 20 points.

The first goal of the match was supplied by Chris Lemire in the 1st, off a defensive mistake.

The 2nd goal was scored mid-way through by Josh Malkin.

Victoria hit the post once but Scottish played well in the back.

Final score: 2-0.

No Lack of Goals

Anyone complaining that soccer lacks scoring would have been pleasantly surprized with the scorelines this weekend (unless they were cheering for the losing sides).

There were a host of blowouts for the final regular season matches for many of the AMSL squads.

The Calgary Callies clinched top spot while totalling 10 strikes in 7-0 and 3-0 victories over Victoria and Lethbridge, respectively.

The Dinos did them two better with a 9-0 hammering of Lethbridge on Saturday and a 3-0 handling of Victoria on Sunday.

Green & Gold got into the action by ending Villains recent good run with a 4-1 victory for the Edmonton squad.

There are two matches left in the regular season:

Drillers host Victoria at ESA North at 7:00PM on Wednesday, August 20th.

Victoria hosts Scottish on Sunday, August 24th at Victoria Park.  Gametime is 3:00 PM

Scottish Fall to Drillers in Scorcher

Report by RT:

Hot night to play.

1st half - the heat slowed the game right down, Scottish unlucky not to be up by at least two before the break (their words).

2nd half - Drillers in the 49th and 81st to seal the deal

Dinos Lose Hope of Top Spot With Loss to Villains

Report by dinofan30:

Dinos scored first on a good cross and good header.

Villains scored on a long cross to an uncovered striker who made no mistake.

Then Dinos had a bad turnover on a breakout pass resulting in a 2-1 Villains lead.

The Dinos pressed their D up in an attempt to break through a very solid Villains defense. This resulted in 2 late goals with odd man advantage breaks.

The game was fairly even but Villains did deserve the victory as they did come on later in the game and shut down any offense and also a few great saves by their keeper.

Trojans Defeat Shorthanded Scottish

Report by RT:

Trojans defeated Scottish 2-0, opening the scoring halfway through the first half.

Their second goal came late in the second half after Scottish had been reduced to 9 men.

Chris Lemire took a straight red with 20 minutes left and then Eric Munoz was sent off a few minutes later for a second yellow.

Big Wins by Green & Gold and Callies

Reports by GGnorth and Red Card:

Edmonton Green & Gold absolutely hammered the Red Deer Renegades by a whopping 8-0 score.

Neil Morrow had the hat-trick, James Ryan Pressley scored a brace, and Jordan Gillespie, Sam Lam, and John Koyne tallied one each.

The Calgary Callies handed the Calgary Villains a 3-1 defeat on Wednesday.  A short-handed Villains squad controlled the tempo of the first half and tallied first, only to see Callies draw one back on a PK.  The Callies scored two more in the second half to seal the victory.

Also on Wednesday, Edmonton KC Trojans blanked Edmonton Scottish 2-0.  The victory was the Trojans' third of the season.  The Scottish loss hurts their chances of making a run into the top four.

Callies and Dinos Fail to Find Match Winner

Report by Red Card:

It was a very aggressive and defensive game from both teams.

There were several decent opportunities on both sides but neither club was able to finish.

The Callies were awarded a penalty shot in the 60th minute, but the resulting shot went wide of the net.

Final score ...... No score.....

Updated Schedule for Rained-Out Matches Available

I'm not sure if I updated this a while ago or RT did it while I was away, but the matches that were rained out earlier in the season have been rescheduled for the Rain-Out Weekend of August 9th and 10th.

Check the Schedule page for all of the updates.

Scottish Hold On to Defeat Drillers

Report by RT:

Colin Rietveld opened the scoring for Scottish in the 13th minute.

Chris Devlin made it 2-0 in the 35th minute, converting a header on a corner kick.

The Drillers pulled one back in the 79th minute when Cameron Schmidt played a perfect through ball to put Robbie Cunningham in alone and he rounded the keeper and put the ball in the empty net.

The Drillers pressed for the equalizer but could not get the ball by Chris Rarog in the Scottish net and the game ended 2-1.

Very tight in the North, with only 3 points separating Green & Gold, Drillers, Scottish and Victoria.

Scottish do have 3 games in hand on the other three teams, so they look to be in a good position.

Dinos Send G&G Crashing Back Down to Earth

Report by GGnorth:

In a defensive battle, with few chances on both sides, Dinos capitalized on a defensive breakdown by GG, with Alex Hannes going in on a breakaway on a counter to score the only goal.

A number of cards handed out, with Sam Lam for GG sent off with his second yellow, late in the game.

G&G Handle High-Flying Callies

Report GGnorth:

Once again GG relied on youth with a number of veterans away, for a second straight weekend by having 8 High School aged players and came through against previously unbeaten Callies.

Jaime Auvigne was sent off with 2 yellow cards at end of the first half, and Dave Randall was dismissed for disputing the call. At the time, the score was 0 to 0.
Callies didnt have Reyes at the game,

Scott Gilroy opened the scoring just before the end of the half, and Eric Pinnell made it 2 to 0 at the 55th minute mark, Callies scored in the 88th minute ( Milan ?) to end the score at 2 to 1.

Trojans Give It to Red Deer

KC Trojans 5 - 0 Red Deer

Report by Doppelganger:

Brandon Black records his 3rd clean sheet of the season and 2nd in a row.

The ref let the two teams play, as there were very few whistles and some good physical one on one battles.

Trojans went up 1-0 on a backdoor goal by Jeff Mathers and the score held until the half.

Trojans then took over in the 2nd half scoring 4 goals including a one timer by Mike Macdonald at the top of the box off a nice feed on a two on one breakout by the Trojan forwards.

The game was played on the turf field at the ESA complex.

*Note: The other Wednesday night match between Drillers and Victoria was rained out.

Sunday Blowouts

Red Deer 1 - 6 Green & Gold

After a respectful showing from the young players on Saturday, with 4 playing their first game yesterday, Sunday saw more established players back to provide support for the younger players.

Green & Gold goals came courtesy of Kurt Bosch, Eric Pinnell, John Konye, James Senior, and James ( Ryan ) Presley with 2 tallies.

Also on Sunday:

The Dinos swept into Lethbridge and hammered the home side by a score of 5-0.  The Dinos still sport a perfect away record and have averaged 2.5 goals for per match, this season, while only yielding an average of 1 against.

July 12th

Saturday Action

Dinos 2 - 1 Green & Gold

Dinos controlled the chances and carried a 1-0 lead into the half. Green & Gold scored midway through the 2nd half and it remained that way until Adam MacDonald notched a penalty shot with less than 1 minute remaining.

Overall the Dinos had many unconverted chances and Green & Gold had few. They did convert their best chance and it was only a late "take down" in the box that allowed the Dinos to come out ahead.

Callies 3 - 0 Drillers
