After the completion of the regular season and playoffs, Vancouver Community Baseball will form a Summer All Star team to compete in the Summer League.  If you want to be considered for selection to this team, please read the following notice carefully, as it outlines what you can expect from the league, the team and also from the Coaching Staff.  As well it outlines what the League, the team and the coaches expect from you.

The Summer League Season starts July 1/08 and goes one month until August 20/08.  We will be playing approximately two games per week and practicing at least 1 or 2 a week.  We will be playing all of our home games at Hillcrest Park.  The Provincials will be held in Victoria , July 31stAugust 3rd  2008  The winner of the Provincials will go on to represent B.C. in the Westerns :                                        (site yet to be determined).

It is important that you are available from July 1 to August 20.  Usually if you are not available for the whole period we would not consider you, but due to the time of the year we understand that families have vacations planned, and sometimes have certain functions such as weddings, birthdays etc. that they are committed to.  If for any reason you are not available for any time during this period it is imperative that you let us know now.  Depending on the amount of time you are away, your skill level, and which dates you will be away, will determine if you make this team.  HOWEVER, YOU MUST BE AVAILABLE FOR THE PROVINCIAL TOURNAMENT IN

If you are selected to the team, the cost of Summer Ball is $.  All cheques are to be made payable to Vancouver Community Baseball.  Any other items such as pro fit hats, team t - shirts, etc. will be an additional cost.

Vancouver Community Baseball expects that every player will treat their teammates, their coaches, the umpires, the fans and the opposing players with respect.  For reasons of safety, all on field instructions from the coaches must be obeyed fully and immediately.  Players are expected to attend all practices and games, unless there is a reasonable excuse or emergency.  Players are expected to behave in a safe manner and not put themselves or others at risk unnecessarily. You, as a player, can reasonably expect that you will be treated with respect by your teammates, and coaches.  You will be treated the same as all other players on the team and will be made to feel that you are an important part of the team.  You can expect that your coaches will teach you as much about baseball as they can within the time that they are given.  All players are encouraged to ask questions and the coaches will do their best to answer these questions in a positive manner.

Baseball is a team sport, and as such, relies on all the players to work hard and pull together as a unit.  This is essential because of the intense nature of Summer Ball. It is expected that you have chosen baseball to be your primary activity for the next 6 weeks.  Players must come to all practices and games.  Repeatedly missing practices or games will not be tolerated.  If you are not going to be committed to this team please do not put your name forward.

If you wish to be considered for this team and are prepared for the practicing and commitment please sign the form below and give it to your coach. Or you can go to our website:  http://www.ballcharts.com/ VMM2                and go to our handouts section, download it, and email it to  Chuck Gough”<cwgough@telus.net> / “Glenn Cho”cholee@shaw.ca

DEADLINE FOR ALL APPLICATIONS IS JUNE 10/07 .

Please be aware that by putting your name forward does not guarantee you a tryout.  It would be a waste of time to have 80 players trying out for a Summer Team.  We are watching your games with interest along with your coaches and you can be assured that each game you play is a tryout.  We will select with the input of your coaches the players that we feel have the best chance of making the summerball team.

Players that are selected to tryout for this team will have demonstrated to the coaches that they have the necessary skills to be able to compete at this level.  As much as we would like to pick everyone, some of you will not be selected.  This is not a pleasant task, but one that we have to do.

AA Summer Ball is 9 man baseball.  WE DO NOT BAT THROUGH THE WHOLE LINEUP IN THE SUMMER.  As stated earlier, Summer League is very competitive.  We will be carrying a maximum of 15 players.  Some players will just be pitchers; some will be role players.  Unlike house league equal playing time is not required.  In past years we have always done a pretty good job of making sure everyone plays a fair amount, but winning is a priority and in qualifying games we will be playing to win and cannot always ensure everyone equal playing time.  During tournaments and exhibition games, we will try and give some of the role players, extra playing time.

When selecting a team of this nature the coaches take into consideration a number of different things.  We have to make sure we have enough pitchers, so we don’t wear out any arms.  We have to make sure we have at least 3 players that can play catcher.  Most of you played infield all year and there are only 4 infield positions.  It is important for us to find out who can play outfield.  Outfield is an important position in Summer Ball and some players are great at it and others not so great.  Other than pitching, outfield goes a long way in determining whether a team is successful or not.  Utility players who can play 2 or more positions are very important. Of course hitting is also a priority.  A team cannot afford to have any weak links in the batting order, or else it will not be able to compete.  (Remember the team with the most runs wins the game and the more runs a team scores, the more pitching can be saved.)

When selecting between two players that are evenly skilled, other factors come into consideration: speed, attitude, availability, number of positions a player can they play, bunting skill, base running savvy, etc.  There is a designated hitter in Summer Ball so if there is a great hitter that does not field particularly well he may be chosen for the team.  The most important thing is that you are a team player.  A group of good players that play as a team will always beat a group of great players that play as individuals. This is important to us and plays a major consideration in our selection process.  A good attitude is important to a team.  You can be the best player in the league but if you are not a team player you will not be selected to this team.

These are just some of the things that we go over when we are selecting a team.  There are many more and too many to list.  Sometimes it may seem that all the best players don’t make the team.  Remember a good baseball team is like a good spaghetti sauce they both need many different ingredients to be special.

In closing I would encourage all interested players to return this form and  tryout for this team,; especially the 18 year olds.  We understand that you are busy and will be embarking on new adventures this summer, but most of you have played baseball for a long time.  This is your last year.  Its only six weeks!  I can assure you that with the talent we have in Vancouver not only will we qualify for the Provincials but I believe we have a very, very good chance of winning the Provincials and representing B.C. in the Westerns.  What a way to end your youth baseball career.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to call or email.
