SEMIFINALS, Sunday recap...

The two semifinals could not have had more dramatic scripts at the AAA provincial peewee baseball championship in Prince George, both played Sunday.

Vancouver Minor survived a major scare from Prince George 14-11 in one semifinal, while Cloverdale needed an extra inning and a walkoff home run to beat Abbotsford 8-5 in the other.

Van Minor and Cloverdale meet in the 2 pm final at Spruce City Stadium.

The host Prince George LTN Contracting Knights fell behind 10-2 to the Vancouver Minor Yankees in the fifth inning, and in fact were very close to having the game end on mercy rule. Kyle Gee's two home runs helped Van Minor build the lead. But Prince George plated nine straight batters in the sixth inning to take an 11-10 lead.

Vancouver Minor managed four runs in the bottom of the sixth to escape with the win over the scrappy Knights, who made the playoffs thanks to a dramatic extra inning win Saturday over Nanaimo. Prince George had two runners on base when the last out was recorded on a backwards K.

In the other game, Damiano Palmegiani's blast in the eighth, his second of the game, gave top-ranked Cloverdale a shot at repeating as champions. Liam Vulcano also homered for Cloverdale.

Day 3, Saturday

What was once a 10-team tournament is now, after three days of battle, down to four teams -- and one of them is the host PG LTN Contracting Knights.

Prince George (2-2, second in Pool A) will face Vancouver Minor (4-0, first in Pool B) at 10 am on Sunday morning at Spruce City Stadium, playoff day in the BC Minor Baseball Association's peewee (13U) provincial championship.

The other semi will see Cloverdale (4-0, first in Pool A) against Abbotsford (3-1, second in Pool B), first pitch at 10 am at PG Minor Boys Field. The semifinal winners will meet up at 2 pm at Spruce City Stadium, the winner of that going to the Western Canadians in Sherwood Park.

Prince George needed extra innings to outslug and outlast the Nanaimo Pirates 8-7 on Saturday. Tommy Kreitz hit a solo shot in the seventh to tie the game, and Brevin Gervais hit a two-run shot in the eighth. Liam Campbell was the winning pitcher. Spencer Walton hit two homers for Nanaimo (2-2).

Nanaimo earlier beat Aldergrove 11-6, while Victoria fell 8-4 to Cloverdale. Rutland split two games, beating Chilliwack 17-15 and losing 11-9 to Vancouver Minor. In the other game, Abbotsford run-ruled White Rock 15-5.
