Lady Waves Corner

The Lady Waves traveled south this weekend to compete in the Lady Gators Classic in Greensboro, N.C.  The fans were out in force, with parents, sibling, sisters and 3 sets of grandparents.  All were attired in the Lady Waves outfits, designed by our very own, #1 Coach’s wife.  One fan went overboard and arrived in style (or not), with St. Patrick’s day beads for all, souvenir St. Patrick’s ducks for the players, a green hat, shamrock earrings and thigh high green and white stockings!

The 6 girls (we were missing our beloved Eliza, due to soccer), started the St. Patrick’s competition a little slow, then Coach Rick and Coach Todd, rallied the troops and got them playing with their usual, “take no prisoners” approach.  The first game was a great warm up as we beat the Winston-Salem Stealers by 20 (?)  We had a short break for repast and camaraderie so we ventured to Chik-fi-a.  As we headed to the parking lot, we noticed one of our beloved player’s parent’s car had been broken into.  The take was a Kindle Fire and iPhone.  The Coach sunglasses were not taken, go figure.  Saddened as we were by these events, we needed to regroup and get ready for the Surry Storm.  Remember we saw them 2 weeks ago in Mt. Airy and beat them by  7.   We started strong and dominated in every position by every player.  The final annihilation was Lady Waves 52  Surry Storm 22  (scores?).  Many of our girls had double digit points and played with their usual smiles and competitiveness.  After our 2-0 great start we checked into the lovely Hotel, the Comfort Suites Airport (call 1-336-882-6666 for a reservation).

We then made plans for an early dinner, some drinks and some NCAA basketball.  We all enjoyed some great food and drinks at the local eatery.  Afterward the players accompanied by 2 Lady Waves moms found a hotel with a pool and snuck them in.  Others returned to the hotel, some ventured to the mall for makeup implements and others remained at the bar for more drinks (Coach Rick, Coach Todd and Statistician Steve).

Upon returning to the hotel, many retired for the evening, while others resumed the fun and watched some more basketball and played some cards, Garbage to be specific.  One Lady Wave fan made some new friends with an arriving wedding party.  A photo opportunity was then necessary.

Everyone got a restful night’s sleep for our 8 a.m. game against the Lady Gators.  We have seen them in several other tournaments.  The recent was our 2 wins over them in Mt. Airy.  The referees forgot to put on their glasses missed many fouls including, slaps on arms while shooting, grabs, reaches and the crème de la crème, a 6 ft tall girl, taking out and stepping on one of our very own, Kylie, #9.  Was a foul, called, no.  Remember the ref’s did not have their glasses on.

Intense play by both teams resulted in a close game the entire 32 minutes.  With 3 minutes left to go, and only 5 girls able bodied to play.  #9 was hurt in the run down (see above).  One of our players got into foul trouble and fouled out.  4 brave ladies stepped onto the court as we were down by 3 with less than 3 minutes to play.  A great 3 pointer was placed perfectly by our very own, Hannah #44, just when we needed it.  Less than 2 minutes, 4 players, tied game.  We continued to play our game, stealing, hustling and not giving up.  We came up short, losing to the Lady Gators by 2 (?).  The Lady Waves played with heart and perseverance.   After a quick break, we went on the dominate the WS Stealers, 44 to 22 (?).  A great way to end a fantastic season under the tutelage of Coach Rick and Coach Todd.  A few tears were shed, names will not be mentioned.

Beware North Carolina teams, we will be back to dominate you in the fall.  Enjoy your time off from the power that is the girls from SW Virginia.  WE ARE THE LADY WAVES!!!!

The Lady Wave season would not have been possible without our Head Coach Rick, his Assistant Coach Todd and Assistant Coach and Cheerleader Andi, Bookkeeper Melissa, Statistician Steven, all the parents who drove their player to practice and tournaments, the fans including our 2 sets of grandparents.  The uniforms were provided by the Narrows contingent.

This season of Lady Wave basketball was provided for by the tremendous generosity of our own Mara, #18’s, grandparents.  They provided much needed funds, so we could stay together as a team and continue with some great basketball.  A huge thanks goes out to them.

The Lady Wave players are responsible for the way this team has come together.  They recognized a need and a will to do more, so this team was formed.  They are very special group of young ladies, both on the hardwoods and off.  It is this author’s opinion that we have a great thing going, with this very special group of young ladies.  They will go far in all they do.
