HS GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP

The Lady BWSL triumphed, as they defeated the VB STORM SHOOTERS (44-34), the WV Shooting Stars (29-12) and the Maryland Lady Panthers (27-10).

GIRLS 14U CHAMPIONSHIP

The Girls 14U Championship saw the host team, VB LADY STORM, trying to win their second straight tournament. The VB Lady Storm came out strong in their first two wins as they defeated the PA Blue Thunder (39-34) and the Carolina Babes (50-2). In other action, the Red Tides defeated the Carolina Babes (46-6), Eria East Athletics defeated the Red Tides (48-39) and the PA Blue Thunder defeated the Carolina Babes (37-11). On Sunday, with all teams facing single elimination, the heat picked up. As the STORM came in with high winds and heavy seas, after two impressive wins on Saturday, they faced a tough Eria East Athletics team with two impressive wins on Saturday, as well. With the size advantage going to the Lady Athletics, the STORM showed no signs of laying down and giving them the win. The LADY STORM was able to jumped out to a 10 point lead with 4 minutes left in the game and the winner going to the Championship game.  The Lady Athletics were able to clamp down on the LADY STORM and out scored them over the next 4 minutes (15-3) to come away with a two point win (35-33), leaving another STORM team with cloudy faces. Waiting in the wings for the winner was the VA Lady Red Tides who had defeated the PA Lady Blue Thunder earlier. The championship game was a rematch from Saturday, but the results remained the same as the Lady Athletics defeated the Lady Red Tides (35-27).

HS BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP

The HS Boys saw the Knights from Norfolk, VA come in and destroy everything in their path as they had something to prove since getting ousted early in the STORM April Tournament. The Norfolk Knights, on their way to the Championship, defeated our very own VB STORM Boys, who were coming off of an impressive showing in NC a few weeks ago (65-45), the Halifax Heat (60-35), the Richmond Spartans (52-36) and, in a rematch versus the Halifax Heat, the result was the same as they defeated the Halifax Heat (45-26). The tournament MVP was #23. This was the Norfolk Knights second time walking away with a VB STORM tournament Crown.

BOYS 13/14 DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP

The VB Heat and JJ Ballin came together in the Championship, but on their way to the Championship, they had to make a few stops. The VB Heat defeated  James Blazers (56-40), the Spotsvania Vision (46-20) and the Fuller Blazers (50-30). JJ Ballin got their shot at the VB Heat by defeating the VB Hurricanes (62-21), the Fuller Blazers (43-31) and James Blazers (52-37). VB Heat and JJ Ballin both came into the Championship game undefeated, sporting a 3-0 record. Neither team could hold the lead as the it changed hands several times. In the end it was the VB Heat that came away with the win over JJ Ballin (53-47).

BOYS 15 DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP

The host team STORM 15U were seeking to win their 3rd straight home tournament title. They started out defending it pretty well as they defeated the Spotsvania Vision (42-19). The game that would determine their fate fell in the hands of the Chosen Ones from Maryland, who earlier in the day defeated the Capital City Pacers from NC, (50-40). This was a game of quickness from the Chosen Ones versus the pressure defense from the STORM. The Chosen Ones came into this game with quickness on the floor but the STORM were able to apply pressure defense and force the Chosen Ones into some turnovers; enough to give the STORM an 11 point lead with over 4 minutes left in the game. Each team continued to battle with their respective styles of play down the stretch. However, in the end, the STORM pressure was downgraded to light winds and cloudy :( as the Chosen One walked away with a eight point win (60-52). Sunday, the Chosen Ones defeated Spotsvania Vision (39-32) to win the Championship game.

BOYS 12U DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP

The Norfolk Cobras went 3-0 in the 12u Division to walk away with the Crown. They defeated the Norfolk Knights (44-37),  James Blazers (52-42) and Jesus Ball (48-39).

AS ALWAYS, THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO CONTRIBUTED TO MAKE THIS TOURNAMENT A HUGE SUCCESS AND KEEPING AAU BASKETBALL AS STRONG AS EVER!!!!  CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CHAMPIONS AND EVERYONE WHO COMPETED…JOB WELL DONE!

Thank you to EVERYONE who supported the Storm AAU Basketball on Memorial Day Weekend!!  The tournament was a total success!  Congratulations to ALL the teams who participated...you represented AAU Basketball with class and excellence!

There were 4 championship games which were extremely competetive and displayed what AAU Basketball is all about...hard work...teamwork... character...and sportsmanship.

The Girls 16-17U championship featured the VB Lady Miracles vs. the
757 Lady Ballers
from Hampton, VA.  This was a very impressive game with the ladies from each team displaying exceptional skill and focus.  The Lady Ballers utimately prevailed 53-42 in a hard fought game. The MVP for 757 Lady Ballers was #21 and the MVP for the Lady Miracles was (#55) Latrice Phelps. These two young ladies gave everything they had on the court during this weekend.

The Boys 13-14U championship was a divisional matchup between the two
VA Tarheels
squads.  (This says a lot about the quality of the VA Tarheel AAU program!)  Our hats are off to the Tarheel players and coaching staff!

The Boys 15U championship featured our very own VB Storm vs. the Young Starz from Suffolk, VA.  This game was very intense with the Young Starz maintaining the slight edge heading into the final minutes.  With 3:41 remaining in the game and the Young Starz ahead by 8 points, the Storm went into their full court press and took control of their own destiny!  Forcing turnovers and capitalizing on them, the Storm maintained their composure and took the lead with only 35 seconds remaining in the game and went on to win 53-52.  We salute the Young Starz for providing an epic battle which tested our skill, perseverance and character.  For his consistent play throughout the tournament, Andre Harriott was named our MVP.  Congratulations, Andre...you earned it!

The Boys 16-17U championship featured the VB Heat vs. the Ballers from Mississippi.  What a game!!  The Ballers came out sharp, showing everyone the quality basketball being played in the South, as they went ahead by as many as 12 points in the first half.  However, the Heat never gave up and reminded us all what Virginia Beach AAU is all about as they cut the lead to 6 with 3 minutes remaining in the game.  Believing in themselves, the Heat fought back to tie the game 62-62 at the end of regulation.  After one overtime...no victor. After two overtimes...no victor.  After three overtimes...no victor!  Finally, after FOUR overtimes, and with the players from both teams exhausted mentally and physically, the Heat reached deep inside themselves and pulled out the victory, 73-68.  Virginia Beach applauds and thanks the Mississippi Ballers for sharing with us their impressive brand of basketball!  For his efforts and leadership, the Heat named point guard (#22)
J. Freeman
their tournament MVP.

Again, THANK YOU and CONGRATULATIONS to ALL the players and coaches who participated!  We also would like to thank the parents and fans who came out to show support for our league and most importantly...to support the kids.

The VB Storm organization and AAU Basketball salutes YOU!!!!!

THANK YOU...to everyone who contributed to making our most recent tournament a huge success!!!  As usual, everyone displayed the class and sportsmanship that AAU Basketball prides itself on.

Now, on to the "ink" that is well deserved...

June 30, 2009

The DC Assault Boys won the 13/14U Boys Championship against the VB Heat (57-34).  The DC Assault team came into the game knowing they had to beat the VB Heat by 21 pts. to win the Championship.  They dropped the 'Assault Bomb'  and cooled the Heat off. The MVP for the Assault was #30    M. Richardson as he led all scorers in ther Championship game with 20 points.

The Girls 11-12U Championship winner was the Lady Boo Williams Red Tide as they defeated the Lady Vipers, Lady Sharks and the 757 Lady Ballers on their way to winning the Division Title.  Congratulations Red Tide!

The Girls 16U Championship winner was the VA Lady Hustlers. After their first defeat at the hands of the VB STORM LADY SHOOTERS, they came back strong to beat the Chester Lady Storm in a very close game (33-32).   In their final game, they made their championship intentions clear as they defeated the powerful SS Lady Ballers (58-51) on their way to winning the Division Title.  Congratulations Lady Hustlers!

The Boys 12U division played some very good games with the Richmond U-Turn escaping with the close victories to come away with the Crown as they defeated the Norfolk Knights (34-33) and the VA Trailblazers (29-28). In the final game they pulled out another close one as they defeated the Richmond Cougars (31-27).  The MVP was #40 Gamble.

The Girls 15U saw the VB LADY STORM defeat the VA Lady Hustlers twice, with both games being nail biters. (33-31 and 33-30.)  Way to go, Home Team!!

Perhaps, the most intruding games of the tournament were in the BOYS 15U bracket as all three teams played their hearts out and the winner came down to net points. That is how the VB STORM Boys came away with their second home title.  The first game of the tournament for the boys 15U saw the Norfolk Spurs edge the Speed City Chargers (43-42). The second game saw the VB STORM defeat the Norfolk Spurs (46-37). The third and final game was between the VB STORM and Speed City Chargers. The VB STORM went into the game knowing that if they won, they would be Champions outright, but the Chargers, losing their first game to the Spurs, had other plans as they defeated the STORM in overtime (36-32). This left the VB STORM with a slight edge in points (+5) over the Chargers with a (+3).  Congrats to the STORM!!  The MVP for the VB STORM was #44 MARQUELL POWELL.

Also, in other news....

The VB Storm Boys 15/16U and Girls 15U competed in the ALL-STARS Slam Fest in Greensboro, NC on June 27.

Congratulations to the VB LADY STORM Girls for winning the Championship game against the Altavista Mystics (54-42). The MVP for the girls was Tiara Young. The Storm Boys 16U lost the Championship game to the host team All-Star Ballers (64-44). The VB Storm had  a chance to make a clean sweep by getting all their teams into the Championship round, but the Storm 15U team fell short, as they couldn't hold the lead in the last couple of minutes in their final two games.
