2017 Boys Cross Country Season Preview
It was another rebuilding year for the Fort Vancouver boys cross country program in 2016. Though there were many individual successes, the team finished sixth at the District Championships and missed qualifying for the Bi-District Meet. This year’s team however, could be the best at Fort in over a decade. With their top three runners from last season returning and a couple new faces joining the team, look for the Trappers to compete for their highest league finish in recent memory and a spot at the 2017 Bi-District Meet.
The team’s top runner is likely junior Andrew Weber. Weber finished in the top seven at the District Championships last season and earned First-Team All-League. His success continued during the track season as he won the District Title in the 800 meters. Fellow junior Ryan Caputo also returns to the varsity squad after a strong showing as a sophomore. Caputo finished 28th at Districts last season and claimed the final spot to the Bi-District meet. He and Weber combined to give Trapper cross country their first ever duo at the event. The team’s other key returner is also one of their only seniors in Diego Meza. Meza just missed qualifying for the Bi-District Meet in 2016, but his leadership didn’t go unnoticed. His teammates awarded him with team captain honors following the season. The final returner from last season is sophomore Jordy Vasquez. Vasquez is a great kid who works hard and expects to compete for a varsity spot. The Trappers have a couple newcomers to watch that are coming over from the soccer program. Senior Pablo Alvarado is a hard working athlete who was First Team All-League in soccer as a sophomore and junior. Junior Juan Osorio is also a strong looking athlete that can contribute in the top five right away. Junior Austin Turrentine has transferred from Texas and also has a background in soccer which set him up for success in cross country. A pair of freshman round out the top ten and come into the season with great reputations. The two, Gabriel Daigle and Ethan Clark, were two of the top middle school distance runners in Vancouver last fall and show the tools to be successful high school runners. Both should compete for top varsity spots right away.
