Trappers Fall in Championship of MBI

The Trappers defeated Ilwaco 11-8 in the semi-finals, but couldn't continue the offensive momentum against Washougal, dropping the championship game of the 2nd Annual Max Beatty Invitational 12-2 to the Panthers.

In game one of the tournament the Trappers faced off against a scrappy Ilwaco team that jumped out to an early 1-0 lead.  Trapper starting pitcher Nick Laurenza settled down, however, and held the Fisherman to just that one run over four innings.  During that span the Trappers were able to plate four runs and take the lead 4-1.  In the bottom of the fifth Ilwaco took advantage of four Trapper errors to tie the game against junior reliever Travis Taylor.  Once again facing adversity, the Trappers responded.  They scored 7 runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a commanding 11-4 lead.  Ilwaco didn't lie down either, scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the seventh before the Trappers closed the door and secured the win, 11-8.  Offensively, the Trappers we led by multi hit games from Taylor, Laurenza, and Austin Phillips.  The trio combined for 7 of the Trappers 11 hits in the game with Laurenza knocking in a game high four runs.

The bats went cold for the Trappers in the championship game however, as they only managed two runs on two hits.  The bright spot for the game was senior starting pitcher Tanner Thompson.  Thompson who was masterful on the mound and kept the Trappers in the game in spite of their defensive struggles.  The left-hander struck out 9 Panther hitters in just four innings and didn't walk anyone in his Trapper debut.  Offensively the Trappers were led by a hit apeice from sophomore Josh Johnson and freshman Dylan Mash.  Their back to back singles scored a run for the Trappers to keep them in the game early.  Cody Farris added an RBI with a bases loaded walk in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to 8-2.  The Panthers erupted for four more runs in the bottom of the fifth, unfortunately, ending the game 12-2 due to the mercy rule.

With the split, the Trappers moved to 1-2 on the season.  They will take the field for their next contest on Wednesday, March 23rd against "The School Down the Street" in the annual Battle for the Golden Baseball.
