Stars 10 Legends 3

Flying is just falling with style

Those fortunate enough to be at the Stars Legends game at South Surrey this past Monday nite were witness to what has to stand as one of the most amazing sights in the history of Stars baseball, and maybe all of baseball. Just when you think you have seen it all the game produces something so new and unusual that the mind is speechless. And yet, there it was: a perfectly smooth infield! That's right. Not a ridge or groove of any sort to be found. Smooth as a baby's bottom (verified by ARob.) Smoother than a straight razor shave (verified by Tup.) Smoother than 30 year old scotch (verified by Physio.) Smoother than a $1,200 hand crafted infielders glove made with albino rhinoceros skin that has been chewed by trained monkeys for a year (fantasized by OConn, or at least now that he knows it exists… or does it?) The infield was so smooth and bereft (look it up) of ridges that it almost distracted from the other amazing sight when Crash threw out a Legend runner trying to tag up and score from third on a fly ball out to right. This play alone was so unusual it's almost impossible to describe, especially given the distraction from the unusually smooth infield. But as I recall the Legends have just scored two runs to narrow the score to 4 to 2. With runners at second and third the batter hits a fly ball to right. Crash makes the catch as the runner at third tags up. Crashes throw comes in right on the money. Big Lefty deftly did nothing as IKat yelled to let the ball through with no cut. (As Big Lefty explained after the game to the waitress at Sawbucks who acted interested until she got her tip, Big Lefty noted that his contribution to this play ranks up there with his contribution to the development of James Paxton when he coached him at age 13. "Not screwing things up is a lost art. It’s not as easy as it looks," according to Big Lefty.) For a moment, it looked like Crash’s throw lacked the legs needed to reach the plate in time as it started to lose momentum like a rock skipping across a smooth lake (not as smooth as the infield mind you, but close.) Alas Ikat’s instincts were correct and the ball arrived in time. Then, inexplicably, the Legend runner, as he was headed towards home, well, he..., well, ummm, let's see. Hmmm. The best I can explain it was almost like he realized that he was a dead duck, so he made out like a dead duck shot out of the sky by one of those Duck Dynasty guys. He seemed to almost instantaneously go from running upright to a full horizontal Superman/Kevin Pillar pose, to a Randy Savage body slam, except not the kind of body slam here you leap from the turnbuckle and land on the other guy, but rather the kind where you fall from the sky like a lead balloon leaving a large body shaped crater in the otherwise really, really smooth infield dirt (even the base paths were smooth!) And worse you land so far away from home that even a full sack of Slicks Sliding Grease wouldn't have helped. The play was kind of like the exact opposite of the blog headline I saw this morning talking about cliff diving that said: 'Flying is just falling with style.' Or better yet as Tup described it: 'F9-2 double play. That ain't so hard.' Full credit to the runner for not giving up on that play. Tremendous effort. But that had to hurt. Ouch!

Other than that, it was a really weird game. Stars won their sixth game in as many starts, defeating the Legends by a score 10-3. Stars relied on stellar pitching by Slimply and Physio who kept the Legends batters off balance most of the evening. Slimples worked himself out of jams multiple times starting in the first were the first two batters hit singles, followed by a K, a great catch on a foul pop up by OConn, and another K. Following a lead off single in the 4th, Simps and IKat combined for a strike me out/ throw me out double play. Overall Slimp allowed no runs on 6 hits, with 6 strikeouts. Physio came on the 5th only to be greeted by stone handed infielders who committed 2 errors leading to 2 runs before the aforementioned inning ending double play catch and put out at home. Not to mention, ok I'll mention, that play only came about due to the previous play where Physio fielded a bases loaded comebacker only to have Ikat lose the throw home in the setting sun. Physio allowed just one more run in the Eighth following an infield single and the Stars inability to turn a complete double play even with two tries. Defense was wanting with 6 Stars errors not counting the two bad throws trying to complete double plays. Stars collected 9 hits along with 9 walks enroute to scoring 10 runs. Crash remained hot. He also went 2 for 3 with a RBI. ARobs bat gave birth to a stand up triple and later scored. (ARob and the triple are doing fine. There's a Baby Gift registry for little Triple set up at Prostock Athletic Supply if you are interested.) Hardcore had a double and 2 RBis and Physio walked 3 times and came around to score twice.

Did I mention the field was in great shape? And the weather! It was almost like, well, like baseball weather. Nice.

We'll complete the Home and Home series against the Legends this Saturday at Dugald. GO STARS!!!
