Warren Oikawa “Tupperware” Player of the Year Award
The Stars began honoring the player who contributed the most to the team’s success starting in the 2006 season. Like most things the Stars do, the explanation of the award name is, well, complicated. Originally the award was simply called the ‘Player of the Year Award.’ Then, as legend has it, one of the Stars had to fill in at catcher at a last minute notice. Since this player didn’t normally play catcher he didn’t own a cup. However, he was quick-witted, so he grabbed a Tupperware bowl out of the cupboard that seemed about the right size, and the rest as they say is history. Since this player was also a perennial winner of the Player of the Year Award it seemed appropriate to change the award name to the “Tupperware Player of the Year Award.” Following the 2014 season the award name was again changed to honor Warren Oikawa, one of the original Stars and our team leader for most of our first decade.
