Town Team Trounces New Ulm, Splits Two League Games

ST. PETER, Minn. – The St. Peter town team won two of three games this past week, thumping New Ulm 14-1 Wednesday in non-league action, losing 5-3 at Fairfax Friday, and then outlasting Belle Plaine 13-9 Sunday for a split of weekend league games. The Saints improve to 13-7 overall and 8-2 in the River Valley League, which is currently good for second place in the league standings.

St. Peter 14, New Ulm Brewers 1

The local nine wasted no time in gaining a comfortable lead Wednesday at New Ulm’s Johnson Park, scoring nine runs in the first inning on seven hits and two walks. The Saints sent 12 batters to plate in the opening frame.

The Brewers scored their lone run of the game in the bottom half of the first after consecutive hits, but starting pitcher Jeff Wenner settled in and got the win after five innings of work. He allowed one run on six hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

The visitors added five more runs in the fourth on six hits and two walks. Luke Schwarz tossed the final two innings, giving up one hit with four strikeouts.

Shea Roehrkasse (3-4, R, 3 RBI) and Jayme Munsterman (3-5, 2 R, 3 RBI, 2B) led the team at the plate.

St. Peter 3, Fairfax 5

The Saints dropped just their second league game of the season at Fairfax’ Memorial Park after leaving 13 runners on base. The two teams traded runs in the first and third innings as Ryan Kapsner knocked in Jovan Rodriguez in both frames. The Saints took a 3-2 lead in the fifth as Roehrkasse scored on a double off the bat of Alex Hoehn, but the home team jumped ahead 4-3 in the bottom half after three singles and an error. St. Peter put runners on second and third base in both the sixth and ninth innings, but was unable to get a clutch hit to score any more runs.

Jesse Anderson suffered a complete game loss, allowing four earned runs on 12 hits with five strikeouts and no walks. Kapsner led the Saints at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a double and two RBI.

St. Peter 13, Belle Plaine 9

The Saints and Tigers battled back and forth throughout the entire game, but a four-run seventh inning gave the home team a lead it would not relinquish in a critical league matchup at Veterans Field. Trailing 7-6 with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Steven Nessler got the clutch hit of the game with a three-run double, giving the Saints a 9-7 advantage. Ty Kaus followed with a single to score Nessler for a three-run lead.

Belle Plaine threatened to regain the lead in the eighth, scoring a pair of runs after a walk and four consecutive singles, but relief pitcher Kevin Sandborg worked his way out of a jam with a couple pop flys and received help from Kaus with an inning-ending sliding catch in right field.

The Saints added three insurance runs in the eighth and Alex Hoehn was able to close the door in the ninth, making his first appearance on the mound. Schwarz started the game and went four innings, allowing six runs on 10 hits. Sandborg got the win in four frames of relief, allowing three runs on five hits with one strikeout and three walks. Hoehn faced five batters in the ninth and walked two. Kaus (3-6, 2 R, RBI) and Rodriguez (3-5, 2B, R, RBI) each provide three hits, while Nessler (2-5, 2 R, 2B, SAC, 5 RBI) contributed five RBI.

St. Peter travels to Arlington at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, hosts Blue Earth at 7:30 p.m. Friday, and then travels to Winsted at 1 p.m. Sunday.
