ST. PETER, Minn. – The St. Peter amateur baseball club has started it season on the right foot, winning five of its first seven games, including a perfect 4-0 record in the River Valley League. The Saints started the year 1-2 with a 7-3 opening loss at Class B Shakopee, followed by a home-opening 8-5 win over league-rival Arlington, and a 9-6 loss to Class A Baseball 365. The local nine have since won four straight, which includes road wins at Jordan (4-2), Class B Victoria (10-4), and defending Region 6 champion Gaylord (10-8), and a decisive 12-1 home win against Le Sueur.
The 2017 roster is slightly different than last season with three departures from last year’s team, but the addition of two new players has been a welcomed upgrade. 2016 St. Peter High School grad Alex Hoehn is a newcomer and has served as the team’s utility player through seven games, while 2015 Mankato West grad Steven Nessler also joined the team since Mankato does not support an amateur baseball team. Nessler has started five games in center field. The pitching staff welcomes back ace Luke Schwarz, who is 2-1 after four starts with a 0.43 ERA. Cullen Bruce, Jeff Wenner, Jesse Anderson, and Jeremy Braun round out the rest of the staff. The batting lineup has many familiar faces, including Shea Roehrkasse, Jayme Munsterman, Jordan Wilmes, Ryan Kapsner, Jovan Rodriguez, Ty Kaus, Jeff Menk, Billy Hanson, CJ Siewert, and Nate Wenner.
The Saints host Class B Chaska at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, host Henderson at 7:30 p.m. Friday, and then travel to Henderson at 4 p.m. Sunday.
