Chuckers take 2nd place at RCBA Wood Bat Tournament
Posted May 21, 2013
Despite a depleted pitching staff the Bantam AAA Chuckers were able to make the final of the annual RCBA Queen Victoria Tournament before bowing out to a strong Cloverdale Spurs squad.
Richmond opened on Friday night, hosting the well coached White Rock Tritons. Despite picking up only 3 hits, the Tritons were able to take advantage of some Richmond miscues, and deploying an aggressive running game, took the 8-7 win.
The Chuckers bounced back with an impressive 11-0 shutout over the Okanagan Athletics on Saturday. The win placed Richmond second the D pool, and set up a Sunday playoff against the always tough Vancouver Mounties.
Coming off of a double header sweep of the Chuckers a week before, the Mounties had momentum on their side. However the Chuckers were able to muster one of their better performances of the year, riding the outstanding pitching of Mackenzie Marquis to a 1-0 shutout victory.
In the semi-finals Richmond played a much improved and game Burnaby Braves team on Monday morning. The Chuckers prevailed by a narrow 5-3 score, pushing them into the final versus the Cloverdale Spurs.
The final had weather and a good crowd on hand, but unfortunately the host Chuckers were not able to bring their A game and the tough Spurs took full advantage, cruising to an 8-2 championship win.
A big thanks to all the teams for making this the biggest and best RCBA Victoria Day Tournament to date. And of course a huge thank you to the parent group, RCBA volunteers, umpires and others who spent their long weekend from dawn to dusk at the park making sure the entire event was a total success.
