Mudhens fall to Marshall

There maybe was a little sliver of light shining on the Minneota Mudhens 3-2 loss to Marshall on Thursday.

Injuries and other decisions have begun to whittle the pitching staff of the Mudhens — but they may have come up with at least a partial answer.

Peyton Nuy, who graduated in Minneota but works in Sioux Falls, came off the bench to pitch four solid innings of relief of Danny Hennen. Although he gave up two unearned runs in the eighth and took the loss, his effort clearly established him as a reliable pitcher.

"I haven't even pitched before this year," smiled a pleased Nuy. His cousin Zach has done a lot of pitching for the Mudhens but his arm has been limited. And Peyton's brother Preston is the starting shortstop for the Mudhens. So Peyton has plenty of reason to feel at home on this team.

"He pitched well. That was nice to see," said Manager Tyson Sonnenburg.

Peyton Nuy fanned two with no walks and gave up just two hits. In the eighth, the inning started with a walk, sacrifice and Mudhen error and ended when Brian Thompson knocked in the go-ahead run as former Mudhen Barry Meyer scored.

Minneota had looked sharp on defense, turning a pair of double plays in the first and third innings. Although Hennen wasn't striking people out, he was getting the A's out.

Minneota tied it 1-1, then took a 2-1 lead in the fifth when Beau Buysse singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch. The 2-1 lead held up until the eighth, when Marshall scored the winning runs.

Tyson Sonnenburg and Beau Buysse each had a pair of hits for the Mudhens.

"We wanted to win, do doubt, but the important thing are the league games," said Manager Sonnenburg. The 5-2 Mudhens will get a chance in the league on Monday, Memorial Day, when they play at the Rosen Express in a 2:30 p.m. game.
