Cottonwood outplays Mudhens

Beau Buysse sat in the dugout, somewhat stunned. "They just played better than we did," he said after a 6-3 Mudhen loss to the Cottonwood Cardinals.

"They are fast and they hit the ball well," the Mudhens "Manager of the Night," said. Manager Tyson Sonnenburg was unable to make the game.

Outside the dugout, sitting on the ground with his equipment, Austin Buysse was feeling dejected. "We didn't do the job," he said. "We stranded 12 runners, really?" Buysse said, shaking his head.

From the start this was Cottonwood's game. Former Mudhen Chris Berg started it off with a booming double, scored on Seth Boerboom's single and Austin Domeier sacrificed Boerboom home. Just like that it was 2-0 Cottonwood in the first inning.

Minneota banged back with a run on a single by Preston Nuy in their half of the first — then began a long streak of not scoring again until the eighth. When they did pick up a run in the eighth and ninth, it was too little, too late.

Not that they weren't trying. Adam Durfee, Jake Leighton, Austin Buysse and Nuy all contributed two hits to the 10-hit Mudhen attack.

But they standed two runs three times and left the bases load in the seventh.

Meanwhile, Cottonwood added a run in the fifth with Berg scoring again on a sacrifice by Seth Plotz, another in the eighth on a single by Brad Borboom and two more in the ninth when Minneota got really sloppy and committed two errors.

"What can I say, we just didn't play well" Buysse responded.

Henry Pesch started and took the loss. Danny Hennen pitched the final four innings. Neither was spectacular, but they gave their team a chance to win. Meanwhile, Cottonwood's Austin Domeier kept the Mudhen hitters off pace. He fanned just two batters and walked seven — but was always able to get out of a jam.

Minneota will play again at 7:30 p.m. Friday at home against the Milroy Irish. The Mudhens are now 10-6 overall this year but this was their third loss in the Land O'Ducks League.
