Fischer pitches well despite loss to Marshall

The Minneota Mudhens had been anxiously waiting for Thomas Fischer to arrive in their camp.

The Gustavus hurler, a Marshall native, pitched against his home town Wednesday and gave the Mudhens a good outing, despite an 8-3 loss.

"I haven't pitched in a week and a half," said Fischer before the game.

But he responded with a two-hit performances with five walks and seven strikeouts. He left the game trailing 4-2 after six innings.

"The arm felt good," said Fischer, who threw 111 pitches and had enough after six innings.

"He did a good job, we're happy to have him back," said Manager Tyson Sonnenburg.

This is Fischer's third year with the Mudhens and he preferred to return to Minneota, despite the fact A's Manager and former Mudhen Budda Greenwood was after him.

"He wanted to stay with us," said Sonnenburg.

Minneota took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Beau Buysse led off with a single and Marshall  hurler Jake Leighton was wild. He walked three batters in the first inning. A sacrifice by Adam Durfee got one run home and the other scored on a wild pitch.

Fischer ran into his own control problems in the second and walked in two runs during a four-run Marshall rally.

It stayed at 4-2 until the seventh when Zach Nuy took the mound for Minneota and he, too, struggled with his control. Marshall, which had just two hits up to that point, collected a run-scoring double by Derek Branson, a groundout RBI by Travis McGlaughlin and a two-run single from Leighton.

Minneota's come back chances were slim, although a long double by Mike Luke in the ninth send Henry Pesch to the plate to make the final, 8-3.

Former Minneota Mudhen Barry Meyer had a long double and was hit by a pitch twice. The final time he got conked in the head by a Nuy pitch — but recovered.
