Coach Thomas started off by saying how humble, privileged and proud to take over a program with such a rich history of varsity girls’ basketball. This program has proudly earned the following state titles in the past: 1946 Girls Class B State Champions, 1960 Girls Class AA State Basketball Champions, 1977 Girls Class B State Basketball Champions, 1979 Girls Class A State Basketball Champions, 1980 Girls Class A State Basketball Champions, and Miller County is the proud home of former MCHS and Auburn University Women’s Basketball record holder and SEC Great, Marianne Merritt Melton. “I am also proud to take over a program that my Uncle Robert Melton worked so hard for many years and honored to follow in the footsteps of such great coaches like him, Coach Joe Lowery, and Former Coach Rev. Walter Daniels.”

God has always been my guiding light and he blessed me with a wonderful mom and many strong examples in my life such as my Uncle Robert Melton and my grandfather’s Jack Melton and W.E. Thomas. I have looked adversity and obstacles in the face many times and my mom always taught me to turn to God,”. Coach Thomas has played and /or participated in arm wrestling, baseball, football, basketball, softball, cross country, jujitsu, kick boxing, obstacle racing, tri-sports and long distance running. He has a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing from Georgia Southwestern State University and teaches 7th & 8th grade Social Studies at the MC Middle School. He currently coaches middle school football and varsity girls’ basketball. Coach Thomas said, “It is my desire to bring the Community of Miller County, Colquitt, Georgiatogether with this girls’ basketball team. I believe in order to do that we must honor all of the accomplishments from the past. Everything that has been accomplished here in Miller County Girls’ basketball is a part of who we are and we should be proud of it. It is always great to honor the past and we will continue to do that but now we must uplift and support the team of today because it’s their time. That is where our main attention needs to be. It’s not about me or anyone else; it’s about these girls and their future in sports, school and life.” Coach Thomas said he wants to build a program and not just have a team. Coach Thomas said, “I want to make a difference 10 years from now when a person I coached goes through a bad time. I want them to remember something the Lord said through me to help them through it. Currently these girls need our support, attention and love. This group of female athletes has worked hard over summer during camp and will continue to be committed and they will put it on the line 25 nights this year to represent you in this community and our schools. Someone told me that I am a good leader; I appreciate that but I am really a good servant, I am a servant to the Lord, Miller County Schools, this community and these kids. I am very excited to coach these girls and help them become winners on the court, in the classroom, and in life.”

Coach Thomas’ record here at Miller County as Middle School/ B-Team Coach was 18 wins and 5 losses including wins against Seminole, Early, Calhoun, and Bainbridge. Also Coach Thomas’ formula for success is “Include the Lord, Work Hard and Believe” he says it’s a simple formula that can take you anywhere you want to go. He thanked his new staff Varsity Assistant Coach/ B Team Coach Whitney Williams, Latonya Cratic Assistant Varsity/Middle School Coach and Glenda Bailey Announcer/ Sportswriter. Thomas said he is blessed to have such a great staff.

The coach said he has some great mentors in his life including his mom, his Uncle Robert Melton, Gene Durdenand Daniel McFather.
