Milestone LMBA Game a Slugfest and a Gabfest
Despite muggy conditions and a slight air issue, the CAPS and BUZZ slugged it out at Langley’s City Park on Sunday, August 15th in the first ever LMBA’s 60+ Division game.
As the 21 players showed up at the park they were divided into two teams before donning two sets of vintage uniforms. The CAPS were adorned with the aqua blue BC Capitals uniforms which have been worn by rep teams participating in Canadian National Oldtimers tournaments and Arizona trips. The home team BUZZ were outfitted in the bright orange garb previously worn by the Burnaby Buzzards (45+). Apparently the uniforms were picked up by a Buzzard player at bargain basement prices. (LOL!)
Buzz starting pitcher Bruce Taylor threw the first pitch to lead off Caps Butch Stefaniuk who grounded out to third. Caps went out in order and the first hit and first stolen base went to Bruce Taylor who was leading off for the Buzz. (LMBA’s Ohtani ??).
A blizzard of hits, runs, and base runners followed a scoreless first inning. 32 base hits were generously distributed on both teams – Buzz Ward Gogol and Caps Butch Stefaniuk had three base hits apiece. Players trying to pad their stats with stolen bases were disappointed when most attempts were uncontested. (LOL!)
On the hill Wayne Hales and Pete Langford pitched effectively for the Caps and thanks to Braden and Spencer from Langley Minor Baseball who enjoyed an introduction to umpiring players much older than their current set of teams.
Players who have spent years playing against other players were suddenly teammates – the game was conducted in a very congenial fashion and the numerous base runners facilitated many humorous exchanges along the way.
More players are expected to turn out for four more games scheduled on Sunday mornings at City Park starting at 10:00am. (August 22, 29 and September 12 and 19. The games will serve as the starting point for a four-team division of players aged 60+ to begin play in 2022.
