Orioles Record Fourth One Run Loss of Season
Posted May 12, 2016
The Orioles had recently played in four straight one run games that included a 1-0 win over Canton, a 4-3 loss to Hanson County, a 1-0 win over Tri-Valley and then a 1-0 loss to Garretson. It was a tough stretch and the Orioles knew they were a couple more hits away from winning all four of them.
On a nice Tuesday evening, Lennox traveled to SFC and the game started early because the heavy prediction of a storm coming at 6:00. The Orioles put freshman Brock Anderson on the mound vs SFC’s junior Spencer Koelwyn who has had a very successful year. The first four innings flew right by as Lennox was held to zero even though they had some threats. As for SFC, they had a couple runners on in four, but for most part, they were held in check. The fifth inning started off well for Lennox as Lawton Luke walked and then Leisinger went to bunt. His bunt was perfect but the pitcher’s throw to first wasn’t as the throw sailed down the first base foul line. As the right fielder wasn’t prepared, Luke ran all the way around and scored to make it 1-0 Lennox.
A team like SFC is hard to hold down and scoreless for a whole game and in the sixth, they went to work. After an error on Kayl which sent Koelwyn to second, VanEgdom grounded out to second to move Koelwyn to third. After Tornow was intentionally walked, then Olson reached on a walk to make the bases loaded with 1 out. Sawyer Prins came up and ripped a single to left to score both Koelwyn and Tornow and SFC took a 2-1 lead over Lennox. A fielder’s choice and a strike out ended the inning but not before SFC had done the damage. The Orioles needed one run to stay alive. Lawton Luke led off the 7th and after working a 7 pitch at bat, he struck out swinging. The next hitter was Tyler Leisinger who on the first pitch hit a hard grounder that got caught up in the infield grass and slowed down enough that the second baseman could get to it and throw out Leisinger. Bailey Ludens was next and on the first pitch he hit a hard liner to second and a very nice leaping grab from Brandon Vandegriend of SFC led to the inning ending and the game ending. Lennox had fallen 2-1.
The Orioles played excellent defense and good offense in this close battle. They faced off against one of the top class B pitchers in SD and they scored a run off of him and got him out of the game after five innings. SFC also battled well against one of the up and rising, young stars of the class B level and that is Brock Anderson. Anderson faced a tough lineup and held them to 1 earned run in six innings pitched. The Orioles also had good hitting from Jacob Lackas who had a single and Jacob Hinker who had a double. The Oriole had fallen by 1 run for the fourth time this year. Lennox has played in 7 one run games this season as they are 3 and 4 in those games.
The next game for Lennox has a date that is to be announced. It is projected that the game is on Monday in Garretson but that won’t be official till this weekend. That game will be the first round of the Region 3 East playoffs. So keep an eye on the website and twitter and be ready to travel to Garretson for a hopeful first round Lennox win.
Thanks for reading, have a nice day and GOOOOOOO Orioles!
