Oriole Girls set for Region 4A Championship; Boys Seek Tournament Win

This month of February has had its ups and downs for the Lennox Orioles in the basketball department. The girl’s team led by Dan DeVries finished their season and then began postseason play. The men’s team also ended their season recently with a tough loss. However the boys have had their share of success in February like the big win over number one Dell Rapids. In this article, you can read a little about the girl’s team and how the girls are a win away from state. We will also talk a little bit about the boy’s game and what they are facing.

The girl’s team started playoffs with a win over Beresford in Lennox 52-40 and then followed that up with a 52-46 upset win over Dakota Valley. Now the Orioles will battle with the highly talented Elk Point- Jefferson Huskies. The Huskies who have already played Lennox will attempt to win for the first time this year. The Orioles defeated EPJ in Lennox at a final score of 48-44. This will be a tough finish for the Orioles as the Huskies are a tough contending team, however with the Orioles trucking and Dan DeVries at the wheel, the Orioles are one more upset away from state.

Looking more in depth at the Lennox vs EPJ game, there are three good players that Lennox will have to contend with and attempt to slow down. It starts with senior McKenzie Mennenga who has been playing well all season. In fact, she led all scoring in the semifinal game vs Vermillion as she scored twenty points. Then there is their two taller and bigger stars. First is the 5’9 junior, Karlee Shatswell. Shatswell is a center and uses her post moves to score in the paint. She was also a big impact in the game vs Vermillion as she scored 12. Shatswell also hauled in 9 rebounds. Finally, there is Morgan Flynn who is a tall 5’10 senior. She had a big game vs Vermillion as she scored 11 points and added 6 rebounds. Now one might ask how Lennox will match up against them, but the answer is quite simple. The Orioles have two great post players especially on the defensive side. Senior Keely Anderson and junior Jordan Kruse are two lock down defensive players who will have their hands full with Shatswell and Flynn. However, they both have the high talent ability to shut down or slow down the two big players from EPJ. However that doesn’t account for the biggest star for EPJ which is Mennenga. Lennox has a number of good defensive guards who can help cover Mennenga. Some examples of these guards are Taylor Weeldreyer who is a senior, Mahli Strasser who is also a senior, Riley Peters who is a freshman and Maddie Vlastuin who is an 8th grader.

Now with the Lennox Orioles matching up so well against EPJ, this is just setting up for a great Region 4A Championship. The girls play at 7:00 in Beresford tonight. The game is at a neutral site for the sake of fairness. So come on out and see the Lennox Oriole girls’ basketball team make their attempt for the Region 4A crown and the opportunity for a State Class “A” tournament bid.

Now onto the boys. There isn’t much to say about the boys are the current time besides the fact that the Lennox Orioles boys’ team will play host to the boys from Beresford. This game is at 7:00 on Thursday night and the winner will play at Dakota Valley. One could ask why I haven’t gone in depth about the Lennox vs Beresford game like I went in depth about the girl’s game vs EPJ. Well I am going to make them wait till Wednesday for the next Oriole Article before they learn about the Lennox vs Beresford game round one playoff game.

It is a big game tonight in Beresford with the Lennox Orioles playing the EPJ Huskies for the Region 4A tournament championship and the opportunity to represent Region 4 and their home town at the State ‘A’ tournament. Live updates will be put on the twitter accounts of Justin Hinker and Lennox Mens BBall. Both of these Twitter accounts will be having live updates tonight during the game. So if you can make it to Beresford, head on down there. Otherwise, go on twitter and follow Justin Hinker or Lennox Mens BBall to get the updates and see the Orioles make their attempt at the crown. Also come on back to the Official Lennox Boys basketball website on Wednesday to read the next Oriole Article.
