Hollander Split the Weekend

With the 2017 playoffs just around the corner, the Cologne Hollanders needed a win over the weekend (if not two). The weekend started with the boys travelling to Glencoe Friday night. The Hollanders dropped a loss as the Brewers were able to pick off four baserunners throughout the game at times when Cologne was threatening to put runs on the board. Alex Meeker started on the bump for Cologne. The Brewers were able to get two runs off Meeker in the first, but the lefty settled in and did everything he could to let offense catch up. The bats were working, but it was those pesky baserunning mistakes that kept the Hollanders from taking a lead and racking up big runs. Four players managed to get two hits during the game: Tim Swanson, Anthony Brenner, Brandon Fritz and Joey Lilya; while Jon Kummer and Casey Clemensen each added one. Meeker ended the night on the mound after seven innings pitched giving up four runs (two earned) off of seven hits, two walks, and five punchouts. Gavin "Something" Celichowski relieved Meeker and held the Brewers giving up zero runs after one inning pitched.

The boys were able to regroup themselves for Sunday's rematch against the Plato Bluejays. Earlier in the year the Hollanders were able to upset the Bluejays in a four to two ballgame at Fritz Field. Yesterday's game was held at Plato and Joey Lilya saw his first Crow River League start. The young right-hander's nerves looked a little shaky in the first as he gave up two runs. From there the Bluejay hitters saw little success off of Lilya. After the quick two runs deficit in the first, the bottom half of the Hollander order came up and responded with three runs as Jordan Litschewski (courtesy running for Swanson), Tanner Luebke, and Kummer all scored. The Hollanders added one more run in the top half of the third as the bottom half, once again, were able to capitalize off of Plato errors. Those four runs would be all Cologne needed as Lilya blanked the Jays for the rest of his outting totalling 7-1/3 innings pitched with two runs (both earned in the first), eight freebies, and three strikeouts. With one man out and one on, Carter Clemensen relieved Lilya in the seventh and got out of the jam and went 1-2-3 in the eighth. With one out in the bottom on the ninth, Plato managed to score a run after an error and a hit. Cologne turned to Kyle Brazil to close the door and he did after a groundball and a punchout. The Hollanders managed the season sweep over Plato with a final score of four to three.

Up next, Cologne will be hosting the Carver Black Sox next Sunday afternoon (July 23rd). The Black Sox won the first contest by a score of two to one back in early June. Cologne will be looking to even the score and take their momentum into the playoffs. Ga Hollanders!
