The CRHS Boys & Girls Teams Make Their 3rd State Tournament in a Row!!!!!

The Cougar Boys & Girls both competed at the State UIL Golf Tournament for their 3rd year in a row on April 29-30, 2013.

The boys represented Region III-5A as the Region Champion and the girls represented as the Region Runner-Up.  There are only 4 regions in the state so this is quite an accomplishment for our Cougars.  The State Tournament was played this year at Morris Williams GC in Austin.  The home teams of Austin did a great job with the home course advantage and took advantage of it as they played awesome and took home the top honors.  Austin Lake Travis HS won both the boys and the girls.  The Austin Westlake girls also took 2nd place.  The boys of Lake Travis shot an amazing 11 under par on the second day to beat top ranked Mansfield who had fired a day one 3 under par 285.

The Cinco Ranch Cougar boys shot an impressive 301-291 total of 592.  This tied the 2007 Cougar Boys school record at State at 592.  The 3 over par second day was an awesome performance.  Junior Michael Cotton fired two hot back nines on both days with scores of 32 and 30 (school record for nine).  The two back nines actually came on different nines as our Cougars teed off on hole one the first day and on hole ten the second day.  Michael shot 73-70 for the two days putting him one stroke out of 10th place which would have put him on the All-State Team.   Senior Matt McClung, playing in his final tournament of this high school career before going to Schreiner College to play, shot an impressive 73-73.  It was very emotional for Matt, his parents, coaches and teamates as he walked off the 36th hole with a great "up and down par".  Matt was one of the captains this year and will be the lone graduate from the boys & girls state teams.  Matt has worked extremely hard throughout his four years and has been a great role model and captain.  In his second State Tournament, Junior J.D. Kiesewetter also fired an impressive second day score with a 73 to help the Cougars shoot 291.  Sophomore Kyle Rogers played his consistent mid-70's game with a 78-75.  Kyle has shot 75's all year long to help his team.  Junior Tom McLaughlin who helped CRHS win District with his 69 there, shot a 77-81 and was one of the Cougar's most improved players from the start of the year.  The Cougars finished in 7th place at State out of 12 teams with their 301-291 (592).  They beat the Region/Houston teams of Kingwood (302-294), Deer Park (598) and Cy-Fair (627).  The defending State Champions of The Woodlands HS of the Houston Area did finish ahead of the Cougars in 5th place with a 300-285.  The Cougars "Grinded It Out" and are State Championship hungry for next year with 4 players returning from this year's team.

The Cougar girls played amazing considering only one lone player returned from last year's State team and Region Champion team.  The Cougar girls started one junior and four sophomores so the experience was amazing for their growth as a hopeful contender.  The girls finished 10th place out of 12 teams.  Austin Lake Travis won first place with a 598 and the defending State Champion of Austin Westlake won 2nd place with a 605.  The Cougar girls finished only one stroke out of 9th and 8th respectively.  The girls shot a 324-315 (639).  Sophomore Maddie Luitwieler finished in 4th place individually with a 74-70 which won her All-State Honors.  She was only one stroke out of a playoff for 3rd place.  State returner Junior Kennedy Ishee had another solid State Tournament with rounds of 78-75.  Co-Captain Kennedy has shot consistently in the 70's all year and has had many individual tournament medals along with Co-Captain Maddie.  Newcomers/sophomores Alexis Kollmansberger and Sarah Yi both fired 86-85's at State.  Alexis has only played golf a little over a year and Sarah was on the second team last year, so both of their futures look very bright.  Sophomore Sara Kelley shot a 86-91 in her new role as 5th girl.  Sara improved dramatically throughout the year with hard work and lessons as she recorded low 80's and a 79 towards the end of the year.  Freshman Madison Goldblum also played a key role in the Cougar's season as she played in many successful top five tournaments and was a vital part of the Cougar's team trophies.  Madison played a great role at State as our alternate.  She was a great motivating team player with great sportsmanship for her Cougar team.

The Cougar boys ended the tournament season with 4 Championships, 2 Second Place finishes, and 3 Third Place finishes.  They won their 7th consecutive District Championship, set a school record single day score of 286, and had all top 5 players averaging in the 70's.  The Cougar girls ended up a successful season with 2 Championships, 5 Second Places, and 1 Third Place.  Like the boys, the girls played in their 3rd consecutive State Championship.  The girls have won 5 out of the past 7 District Championships with runner-ups in the other two.  Both teams played in high level competitive two day tournaments all year, and were often ranked in the State's Top Ten.  Great year Cinco Ranch golfers!!!!  You made the entire Cinco Ranch/Katy ISD community proud with your desire, dedication and sportsmanship.
