AXEMEN ARE ICE COLD IN EXHIBITION GAME
Last night the Camrose Axemen were as cold as the temperature losing 13-3 to the Rosalind Athletics. Temperature at first pitch was 10 degrees Celsius with heavy clouds leading to the game being called after the sixth inning due to darkness.

The Axemen offence struggled mightily in the cool temperature collecting only three hits on the night. Zach Bailey (SS) would hit a triple in the bottom of the second inning and would score on a throwing error to home, Jacob Kendall (1B/2B) would collect a RBI single in the fourth inning and Kris Kushnerick (1B) would hit a single in his only at bat.

Rosalind on the other hand showed no signs of the cold weather effecting them as they would bang out 13 hits against the Axemen pitcher trio of John Robbins, Cal Zimmer and Brady Ryan. Brett Yuha would hit a pair of triples in the game while Ryan Yuha finished the night 4-4 with a double, a walk and 4 RBIs.

Defensively the Axemen looked incredibly rusty with three errors and a handful of plays not made. Missed fly balls and tough positioning would lead to a handful of runs as Rosalind continually put the ball in play against the Axemen throughout the night.

Axemen Debuts
  • Brady Ryan (3B/P) // 0-1 with 2 walks and a hit by pitch; 2 innings allowing 5 earned runs with 3 walks and 5 hits surrendered
  • Winston Turtle (CF) // 0-3
  • John Robbins (P) // 0-2; 3 innings striking out 4, walking 3 and allowing 4 earned runs on 6 hits
  • Brendan Erik (SS) // 0-1
Returning Axemen
  • Wes Wilson (LF) last suited up for the Axemen in 2008 // 0-1 with a hit by pitch
  • Wes Harrison (3B) last played with the Axemen in 2013 // 0-1
Opening Day is on Saturday May 12 as the Axemen will travel to Tofield to take on the Braves at 2:00pm. The Braves feature former Axemen pitcher Corey Epp, who is expected to get the opening day start for Tofield. In 2017 the Braves finished 10-4, good enough for second place in the PBL behind the 11-3 Rosalind Athletics. No word yet on who rookie manager Zach Willms will have toe the rubber for the Axemen on Saturday but the team should have a committee of pitchers ready to go.
