EXHIBITION GAME VS DEFENDING PBL CHAMPS
The Camrose Axemen will kick off, and end, their 2018 preseason schedule with a Wednesday night game vs the Rosalind Athletics at Harry Andreassen Field in Camrose.

Due to unsuccessful attempts to schedule two other games, Wednesday night will be the only exhibition game the Axemen will have before the 2018 Powerline Baseball League schedule begins on Opening Day, May 12. The Axemen will travel to Tofield to take on the Braves who were 10-4 in 2017, good enough for second place in the PBL standings.

2017 PBL Standings

The Axemen and the Rosalind Athletics have a limited history which includes shared players and head to head matchups. Sometime around 2009 or 2010 the Camrose Axemen lost to the Athletics in the final of Rosalind’s tournament. This was while Rosalind was still apart of the Battle River Baseball League (the A’s would join the PBL in 2015). In 2012 the Axemen would get bested by the A’s 7-0 at the Ryley Sports Day Baseball Tournament with Dan Enright throwing a 3 hit (all singles) shutout for Rosalind defeating Camrose starter AJ Bosman. In 2016 the Axemen and Athletics would play an exhibition game in Camrose prior to the start of the North Central Alberta Baseball League season and the PBL season. While an official scorer was not used, the A’s came away with an approximate 9-2 victory. Finally the two teams, or a variation of the two teams, met at the 2017 Tofield Canada Day Consolation Final with veteran pitcher Cal Zimmer blanking Rosalind 11-0.

The two teams have had players split time between them while the Axemen were in the NCABL and the Athletics in the PBL. Both Steve and Dan Enright played with the Axemen in 2013 and 2014 while Chance Wheatley, Joe Pasychnyk and Paul Ofrim have been on the Rosalind roster as recently as 2017.

Rosalind is also the team to beat in the PBL having won the championship in 2017 and since joining the league in 2015, they have had nothing but success;

PBL Championships: 2 (2016, 2017)

PBL Championship Appearances: 3 (2015, 2016, 2017)

PBL Playoff Appearances: 3 (2015, 2016, 2017)

PBL Pennants: 1 (2017, 11-3 record)

PBL Record: 27-14-1

The game will mark the first time wearing Axemen colours for six players and the first time after long hiatuses for a couple other players. Wes Harrison last played for the Axemen in 2013 and the last time he was on the field for the team he was sliding headfirst into home for the winning run against the Edmonton Athletics. Harrison had totalled 638 plate appearances with the franchise from 2002-2013. Wes Wilson last suited up for the Axemen in 2008 before returning to the Armena Royals for a number of seasons in the PBL. From 2002 to 2008 Wilson hit .371 for the franchise before retiring in 2013 with the Armena Royals.

First pitch for the exhibition game is scheduled for 7:00pm at Harry Andreassen Field in Camrose.
