AXEMEN HOLD ON TO BEAT SHERWOOD PARK

Win number four on the season came for the Axemen on Wednesday night as they defeated the Sherwood Park Athletics 5-4 at Harry Andreassen Field in Camrose under circling storm clouds.

The Axemen would capitalize on a rough start to the game by Athletics right hander Forrest Hisey. In the bottom of the first Hisey would surrender four runs to the Axemen as Cal Zimmer, Jordan Riopel, Blair Mulder and Ryan Petryshyn would all be walked by Hisey in succession to start the game. All four would eventually come around to score and they would be the only four walks surrendered by the young Athletics pitcher in the game. Hisey would settle down after the first inning stranding a total of eight Axemen runners in his six innings of work.

After winning last week 22-3 over the Sturgeon Paladins, the Axemen played Wednesday night like they had a weeks worth of rust. Camrose could only muster six hits against the Athletics with rookie Ryan Burton leading the way with a pair of singles on the night including a RBI line drive hit to centre field in the first.

Left hander Blair Mulder would get the nod for the Axemen, his first action on the hill since May 8 against the Edmonton Athletics. Mulder admitted he laboured a little and felt rusty as he would need 126 pitches to get through his six innings. A high strikeout count of ten on the night would contribute to his pitch count along with Sherwood Park working five walks from the 2015 NCABL All Star.

Mulder would battle for the Axemen and earn his third player of the game award of the 2016 season to lead the team. On the mound Mulder would throw six innings with ten strikeouts and five walks allowing two earned runs to score while at the plate he would finish 1 for 2 with a run scored, a walk and a hit by pitch.

Strange moment in the fourth inning when Mulder would be charged with a balk after he would stop his motion after hearing time called. As it turned out the time was yelled by the Athletics Mike Falkins who was at home plate. The balk would send Andrew Kalynchuk to third base but luckily for the Axemen Mulder would later induce a bases loaded ground out to keep the Athletics off the board in the inning.

It would turn out to be a rough night for Athletics catcher Mike Falkins as Axemen centre fielder Jordan Riopel would throw him out twice at home plate to save a pair of runs. After the second time being thrown out at home Falkins would be ejected from the game for arguing with the home plate umpire and slamming his helmet.

Axemen closer Kyle Muzechka would be needed in the top of the seventh inning with the Axemen up 5-3. The left handed reliever would get his first save of the season despite the Athletics being able to manufacture a run off of him after a Hisey double and a sacrifice fly by Henry Duke would make it 5-4.

The win puts the Axemen into second place in the NCABL standings, trailing the 6-0 Edmonton Blackhawks by a game and a half. The Axemen will next take on the 1-5 St Albert Cardinals at Legion Memorial Ballpark in St Albert on Tuesday June 14. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15pm. They will then stay on the road with a double header on Sunday June 19 in Westlock, game one is set for 1:30pm with game two scheduled for 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
