Braves Finish Provincials with a 7-5 Loss to Nanaimo - Yaremko Caps Season with Rye Bread and Mustard on his Grand Salami

Posted August 7, 2016

The starting infield written in on the 74th and final line-up card of the season said everything about the significance of the final game of the round robin for the Burnaby Braves. Sporting an 0-3 record and playing a Nanaimo team that had been eliminated in their Saturday morning game, the Braves started an infield of Kaz Kada at first base, Lucas Grant at second, Michael Briglio at short, Brendan Wang at third, and Sam Van Snellenberg behind the plate. Combined, in their previous 73 games, the five players had a total of zero defensive innings at their position; however, they combined to make only one error in the game. The Pirates jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead through three innings and had a pitcher on the mound whose quality was well above what one would expect to face from a team that had been eliminated, making the Braves wonder why he had not pitched before the Pirates elimination. Nonetheless, after taking a no hitter into the fifth the Braves would load the bases for Jack Yaremko who crushed a pitch into the right field bleachers for a grand slam, suddenly cutting the Nanaimo lead to two. After Jonny Servidad singled, Brendan Wang lined out to the centerfielder who attempt to double Servidad off at first base but threw the ball into the dugout. After some discussion the umpire's placed Servidad at second base which prompted Head Coach Kyle Williams to produce the $50 deposit and file a protest alleging the umpire's had misinterpreted rule 5.06 (b) 4 (g) and that Servidad should be awarded third. BC Minor upheld Williams' protest, the 12th successful protest of his managerial career and fourth in a provincial championship. In making their ruling, BC Minor failed to follow their own protest procedure per Rule 28.05 as they failed to collect the deposit, failed to send the teams to their dugout, failed to meet in a private area, failed to hear the game crew chief first, failed to allow the protesting head coach to explain his protest, failed to allow the Nanaimo Head Coach to explain his position, and failed to have the Protest Committee meet privately with the UIC to discuss the protest. Despite these procedural violations, the correct ruling was made by BC Minor. The base proved important as Kochi singled home Servidad on a line drive to centerfield, that he would not likely have scored on from second base. Nanaimo would claw a run back in the 6th and would escape a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the frame and hold on for the 7-5 victory. The Braves finished provincials with a 0-4 record....although per the BC Minor website, Burnaby has been awarded a forfeit win. No explaination has been provided from BC Minor on why the Braves have been awarded the win.
