Game Notes: The Rockets were challenged to be more physical in this one after turtling against Weyburn on the weekend and they responded very well by playing some very strong defence. The rebounding was very good as well as - in particular for Hanna and Natasha who got 8 and 6 rebounds respectively. The Rockets played a very solid first quarter as they jumped out to a 12-7 first quarter lead - it would have been a bigger lead if Vanier hadn't drained a last second buzzer beater three. Vanier picked up their game and started hitting some outside shots and pounding into their big post which caused the Rockets to step up physically and they did a decent job by living through the onslaught and taking a two point lead into half time. Vanier came out roaring at the beginning of the third and went on a 7-0 run to take a five point lead. Without needing a timeout, the Rockets bore down and finished the quarter 15-5 to lead by four after three quarters. The Spirits came back to tie early in the fourth and then it was a back and forth affair. The Rockets would score and the Vanier squad would match. With 45 seconds left, Alexa dropped a three for a 48-45 lead. Vanier comes down and their big shooter drains her own three to tie it up with about 30 seconds left. It looked like the game was headed for overtime because the play became scrambly and neither team could possess the ball. Then with about 10 seconds left Alyssa found herself open in transition at the three point line and she drained the three for the lead. Shortly after that the Rockets received a jump ball possession on the Vanier inbound and they weathered the foul fest (Vanier only had two teams fouls) to end the game with the victory. Bell ringer went to Alyssa for stepping up in the second half and hitting three 3's and to Katherine for subbing very well for Natasha and being a force under the glass. |
